In Cambodia, many of these garment workers and their families have between 1 and 3 changes of clothes per person that are worn until they are rags. When the base salary for a garment factory worker is $126 per month for 6 day weeks and up to 14 hrs a day, clothes are a luxury item with food being much higher on the list of requirements. Yet in 1st and 2nd world countries clothes are no longer a luxury. Sure you can still spend ridiculous amounts on a fashion label, but the majority of people can afford to buy a $5 t-shirt for just 17 minutes of work on the minimum wage in Australia. If you are on the "average" wage in Australia it takes only 7.5 minutes of work to buy your $5 t-shirt and mere seconds for the higher earners in our country. A Cambodian garment worker needs to work over a day for that same luxury.
