But the hardware store doesn't offer mulch in small quantities, and I was not looking forward to trying to maneuver a huge bag of mulch onto public transport (let alone take it out when I got to my stop). So I got this.The block rehydrates to about half the volume of the bag, not almost the whole thing like the picture on the back shows. This does rehydrate to a generous bit more than a gallon, so I did get the amount of mulch promised, but the picture on the back is somewhat misleading.According to a couple of quick unit conversion calculations, if you spread this amount of mulch one inch thick, you will cover 4 square feet, and if you spread this mulch two inches thick, you will cover 2 square feet. One inch thick is enough to deter weeds and visually cover the soil, but if you want to use mulch for water conservation purposes, it will need to be at least two inches thick, and possibly more. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Decent *by D***D on Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2020* Not super fantastic but certaintly not a bad product. Expands pretty decently and I havent smelt anything. I have a succulent I put next to my bed and I had to put it in a bigger pot. I decided to mix mulch with fertilizer (no one wants to smell cow manure in their bedroom). Honestly it works amazing in the smell department. A lot of mulch comes in that tiny little bag too. This stuff stores so small, I usually keep a block of it on hand now. It's easy to plump up and once in a plant, stays fresh-looking and nice for at least months--probably longer. I've started using it in my indoor containers too. "Scent" is a weird one to rate--I said five stars because I don't notice a strong scent from it, good or bad, so if you want to smell cedar chips, this may not do it for you.
