They can lay flat for recharging or leave open for recharging. The charge holds as well as expected /reported. It not my brightest light (I have higher intensity lights for other tasks) but it is a nice light to live by, relax wi5h, read near, or play a game. Happy to have on hand for power outages (all too common in my area). We have used Solights in two hurricanes and they are fantastic! SolarHelix and the Solar Puff both will light up a room with light for 8-12 hours on a full charge. I love the way they both fold down for easy packing or storage. The little Twilight model is perfect for illuminating small spaces or to carry. I made little paperclip hooks that I hung on the light fixtures in the bathrooms so that we could hang them for bathroom activities at night. All of the Solights are super lightweight. You can attach them to magnetic surfaces with a magnet, hang them from just about anywhere and clip them to your belt. Great for backpacking because you won't find any light that gives you this much illumination for the weight! The company is an amazing company, their humanitarian efforts in places around the world that have been devastated by natural disasters is truly heart-warming. Obviously charges easily. I gave it a lower review because on a full charge, using it at the lowest setting (it has 3 settings: low, high and flash), it was dead at 5 hours and actually dimmed significantly at 3- 4 hours. I have nothing to compare to; this is the first solar light I have had. I was planning to use it as an alternative light in the bathroom overnight, but it is useless (unless you stumble in the dark, find the button to turn it on, then off when you leave).
