The tape was placed in corner of the room that didn't receive this light directly. My intention was to simulate what I viewed as the most common situation.The tape had been left for 4 hours in a brightly lit room, either diffuse light from a window (not sunlight) or from the normal artificial lighting in a office-type setting. The 4 hours sitting in the light (recharging) was arbitrarily chosen. Shorter times seem to produce equivalent results for up to 4 hours, but I didn't get around to the longer observations.Since I didn't have a meter, my measure of brightness was to place it next to a cardboard box with a high gloss white finish. This box was decidedly visible in very low light situations (it reflected light well).Observation was from about 6 feet away without allowing eyes to adjust to the darkness (I came from a well-lit room). Again, this was chosen to represent my most common situation.0 hours: tape is significantly brighter than the box.3 hours: In near full darkness (I shut the door to the room), it is very bright. In slightly less darkness, it has roughly the same brightness as the glossy box -- both are readily seen. Both stand out strongly from the background which is a bookcase full of books with the usual assortment of covers.4, 5 & 6 hours: Still very visible, but doesn't register as quickly when I walk into the room.8 hours: Dim, bur easily spotted when I look toward it (at 6 feet).10 hours: Doesn't register as glowing. It registers as the same as light coming off a shiny object in that room.The length of tape used matters: The above results are for a 6-inch long piece of tape. For a 2-inch long segment, 5 hours was about the limit of my detecting it at 6 feet. YMMV: my eyes are 65 years old.Note: This tape does NOT stand out in merely low-light situations because the ambient light overwhelms the luminous output -- it is simply a dull yellow-green and easy to miss. However, this threshold is a level of light where I wouldn't need this tape. Instead, this is a circumstance where you should use reflective tape. If the circumstances vary from low-light to darker, you may want use a combination of reflective tape and this tape.Realize that the light charges only the portions of the tape that it hits. For example, I wrapped the tape around a flashlight and the side that had been facing out into the room was very bright, but the side facing the wall started out as dim.-- Douglas B.
