**Q: Is the underside flat or grooved?**
A: Underside is flat.

**Q: I put the press together and, as many of the low star reviewers, the handle is incredibly loose.  Is that the design?**
A: These are locking nuts and need to be tightened with a par of pliers around them, or wrench, along with a screwdriver (an electric works best).  Also, don't do what I did and oil the press first (made it very challenging to hold everything while tightening, LOL!).
