Review: Do you walk on snow or ice regularly? Get these. - My first winter in a state where snow exists, I tried to walk around with running shoes, and about faceplanted four or five times. After that, I did some research and Yaktrax constantly came up as a solution. After an entire winter of walking to work and being oblivious to traction requirements (along with one instance of winter hiking), I would heartily recommend these. Unless you're stepping on sheer ice, you can walk anywhere with near impunity. They slip a little when your toe comes off the ground and you move forward to transfer weight to your other foot, but it's immaterial because that foot isn't supporting weight at that point. They are fantastic for walking in snow/ice. I would caution against using them for jogging/running, for the very reason above. They have no serious tip of the toe traction, so they will often slip on that motion. Not a problem when walking (other foot has got you covered) but when running you spend some time in the air not supported by either foot, and a slip there can cause a drastic loss of balance. Yaktrax does make running specific ones, but I cannot vouch for their efficacy. If you use them regularly, these will last slightly less than a season. The metal coils wear down surprisingly quickly, but this is somewhat true of any product that you put your full weight on all the time. By the end of winter I was crimping and bending the busted coils with pliers to make them last until spring/summer. If you live in a perpetually snowbound area, they may not even make it through half of winter... so get two pairs. The irony of Yaktrax is that while they increase your traction on many surfaces (concrete, snow, ice, etc.) they drastically reduce it on several indoor surfaces. On tile I have had to brace myself on one or two walls to prevent crashing to the ground. Works well enough on carpet, but after wear hits the coils, they will snag and stick in the carpet, making it even worse to walk on. Bring another pair of shoes to use for indoor use, or be prepared to take the Yaktrax off and on repeatedly. They are not easy to quickly remove or add to shoes (unless you are more nimble than me and that is a very low bar). The short version is: Do you live in a place where winter occurs in short intervals? These will work well. Do you live in a place where Winter is a constant fact of life? You probably already have a solution. Either way, if you can afford the expense (and they're not that pricey), you can stroll around during Winter with impunity.
Review: Great for ice/snow but rubber sections broke too quickly - Great for ice/snow but be aware they have a short lifespan. I usually use microspikes but was living in Denver for a couple of months last winter, so bought Yaktrax. A little over a year later (maybe only 150-200 miles) a couple of the rubber straps broke and the metal coils on the bottom started getting dangerous (could hurt me or my pups). So, I tossed them and bought a new pair. I only expect them to last one year (Midwestern forests this winter).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: sizing**
A: If you are at the upper end of the Taktrax size range listings and will be wearing large boots like winter Sorrel pack boots, you may want to go up one size. For example, I wear a men's 10.5 shoe so the regular sizing says the medium goes up to size 11. But with the pac boots you really have to stretch them hard to fit over the soles, so I got a large for those boots as well as a medium for regular shoes.

**Q: Do these work well to run with on concrete sidewalks that are partially clear with snow and/or ice remaining only in spots?**
A: When they were originally made in Boulder, Colorado, I could run 2 dogs every day for 1-4 miles and get at least one winter and part of the next on mixed ice and pavement. When they off-shored the coils compressed then wore down and rusted and the rubber fatigued within a week or 2. In other words they increased their profit margin by turning the product into trash by using a lower grade of steel and spacing the coils further apart. So it is possible but not when the investors are too greedy.

**Q: No size chart? What size is women's 8-9?**
A: I wear a Women's size 8. The manufacturer sizing information on the box, says for U.S. Women's Size 8, get a SMALL YakTrax. I have KEEN winter boots, size 8 medium. Keen's winter boot have a substantial heavy sole. There is no way that I can stretch the YakTrax Size S onto the KEEN boots. A medium would fit (but I haven't tried yet). The YakTrax SMALL just barely fits over a pair of "fashionable" winter boots, size 8, that have a dainty-sized,or thin sole. I suggest that you take your boots into a store and fit the YakTrax on before purchasing. If the stretch is too tight, you'll know right away (it'll strip off your nail polish and split a nail or two attempting). Be careful during the stretch 'cause it's like a sling shot! It can take an eye out! :) You want a YakTrax size that's easy enough to take off when you go indoors because on stone floors, these are slippery and on carpet, they will rip up the carpet. The manufacturer sizing information is misleading.

**Q: Getting for a woman who is 73 and in pretty good shape. Would you recommend for her?**
A: I have owned these for two years but really put them to the test today. Even the snow was coated with ice which did not collapse under my weight, but I was able to easily walk with them! I am completely impressed, but I agree with not wearing them indoors. After my elation at not falling on the ice and seemingly doing OK walking on a tile floor in the Metro station, I fell when stepping off the train onto the same tile floor. I stayed on the floor and removed them before preceding on my way. I am an "older lady" and think these are great for anyone. They pretty much require you to sit down to put them on, however, or maybe you could put them on most of the way and then put on your shoes. I have not tried that method yet.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great traction spikes for icy arctic weather
*by D***E on February 6, 2026*

These pro traction spikes are great. They fit nicely over my boots, they haven't slipped off or broken, and they make walking on this awful ice so much easier. I am sorry that I didn't order them sooner. Not sure how long they will last, but for the time being, they are wonderful at this low price. They stretched very well over several styles of shoes and boots, and the tightening strap on top helps to keep them in place. Love them for this arctic winter weather, highly recommend them.
