Penguin Pottery's Sodium Silicate Solution is used to deflocculate (ie. prevent lumping) casting slips. This solution is water-soluble and is made with soda and silica. Over time, plaster will absorb the solution and will deteriorate / erode. Sodium Silicate can also be used to create a crackled texture on ceramic surfaces. Please note that sodium silicate will be damaged if frozen or kept in cold temperatures. Review: I purchased this Penguin Pottery sodium silicate to make magic water using soda ash, and it worked really well for that purpose. I did not use it for crackle effects like some people do, but as an alternative to traditional slip it performed exactly how I hoped. When mixed with soda ash, it creates a strong bond and works great for joining clay pieces during hand building. It applies easily and holds parts together well without needing additional support. Plus no slip mess in my studio! If you are a ceramic artist or potter looking to make magic water or want an alternative to slip for clay construction, this sodium silicate is a solid option and does the job reliably.

A: Sodium silicate is a generic name for chemical compounds with the formula Na ₂ₓSi yO ₂y₊ₓ or ₓ· y, such as sodium metasilicate Na ₂SiO ₃, sodium orthosilicate Na ₄SiO ₄, and sodium pyrosilicate Na ₆Si ₂O ₇.

A: Sodium silicate burns out at cone 015 it’s not meant to be there after firing. It helps with glaze consistency, thinning out your slip, and used for surface decoration.

**Q: Can you put this on top of a cone 5 glaze?**
A: Generally you use sodium silicate as an ingredient for slips or for surface decoration while your piece is still unfired.
