It's just like regular sand. It would most likely cloud the water and then settle. It says it's all natural so it would be good for any use. **Q: Can you use in fish tank?** A: I would assume so. It may cloud the water when you put it in but it would clear. It's all natural and is just like regular sand. I would get it wet first and put it in slow if you already have fish in the tank. But if you are able to do it when it's empty it wouldn't matter. My toddler ate some and she was fine so I can attest to it's all natural claims. Lol **Q: Do these come in case counts?** A: Not that I know if. I ordered a single item. **Q: Can this be used on top of soil in plants to deter fungus gnats?** A: A layer 1/16" thick won't hurt the plants and might temporarily do what you want. But I think it's noticably heavier than the organic parts of soil, so it will tend to mix into the soil and get lost, with any disturbance.
