The advantage without a lid is that I don't have to open it every time, and it takes up less space when standing. Also I feel that dust may get in between for those with built-in screen protectors. Unfortunately, my pencil with a nylon sleeve on it magnetizes to the case nicely but will not connect or charge with my iPad. This is not the case or the sellers fault. I took a risk to see if it would work but sadly it was not a success. I still kept this case bc I love it and I just bought a separate apple pencil charger to accommodate the problem. Overall very nicely built and pretty low profile.
