Only 2 wires. One hot and one for a tack. This made my life so much easier **Q: Will this directly plug into my 88 xj?** A: You got one 1 of 2 mistakes... Your 88 is not an xj....or if you have an xj...it's not a 1988. Proof read before hitting send. How could we possibly answer? **Q: i own 1983 cj 8. it got a 4.2 engine on. will this fit in this engine ?** A: I installed this in my '77 CJ7 4.2L 258. Pretty straight forward, I was able to remove the pre-existing coil and swapped out the sparkplug wires with new ones. You may have to set the crankshaft to TDC (top dead center)...lots of YouTube videos on how to open up #1 spark plug and check the position of the piston. This made my engine run so much smoother. Been in there for over a year and still runs awesome. **Q: Do I need to swap gear from original distributor so it would not "eat" my camshaft?** A: It is always best to swap the original gear onto the new distributor if it is in good shape. I have seen several aftermarket "new" gears eat up a cam.
