Plug it in and use it!

The function of this device is to provide power (in this case 5v DC) to a Raspberry Pi over the Ethernet cable that's plugged into the Pi 4's on-board Ethernet port. To use it, you'll also need a couple of decent quality Ethernet cables and a Power over Ethernet injector. I've included links to the equipment I use with this (also bought on Amazon) as examples. This hat plugs into the Raspberry Pi's GPIO header and has a few extra connectors (pogo pins) that line up nicely with little pads on the Raspberry Pi PCB. No soldering is required, and there's no software setup either. The Power over Ethernet Injector plugs into my network hub (for the data) and the mains (for the power) and uses the spare cores in the Ethernet cable to send power to the Pi. This power is sent up your Ethernet cable at a higher voltage than the Pi can use, and the hat handles the conversion back to 5v DC needed by the Pi to work.I use this on a Raspberry Pi 4 that lives in our loft, where there is no mains supply. It happily drives the Pi 4, a software-defined radio and a GPS receiver without any loss in data rate. You simply plug it all in, and it just works. The box contains some basic instructions, as well as some standoffs to keep the hat mounted firmly against the Raspberry Pi (though they weren't suitable for my purpose, so I bought some separately). My PoE Injector: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08LQP8CYD/My Ethernet Cables: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003ZB7NE2/

An excellent board for Pis in remote locations

*by R***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2024*

I use my Raspberry Pi3B as a Home Assistant hub, and to get the strongest signal with the Zigbee dongle, it needs to be central in the house. However, the best location isn't where there are any mains sockets, so I decided to run a single ethernet cable there and use a PoE switch to power the Pi.The hat fits easily onto the IO pins, but still has a pass-through for the pins, so they're available for other uses. The pack includes some standoffs to keep the boards secure. The hat comes with a fan to keep air moving around and the PI cool. The slight downside is that if you have heat sinks attached to the chips on the Pi, there is a large component on the hat that interferes slightly. You can raise the hat a few millimetres to get it to fit, while still maintaining the electrical connection. The hat does make the Pi too tall for many off-the-shelf cases, but you can get sometaller 3D printed cases.

    It Just Works

*by D***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2024*

I love that the board clips onto the board, while allowing use of all the breakout pins.Using my old Netgear POE 8 port switch was ample for this to work.It just worked.Note my load on the device is just running HomeAssistant. No other hardware.
