That is closed....it opens from the top (where you add water and coffee) and is 20" high while open/needed to clear. **Q: does it have a setting to make say just 3 cups** A: The minimum amount of water that needs to be in the BVMC-SJX33GT is approximately 4 cups. **Q: why does it leak water out the bottom** A: There could be grind build up in your coffee maker.
