The self-inking stamp uses BCH water-based ink, and the pre-inked stamp uses BCH oil-based ink. Self-inking stamps either use a felt pad (not a gel pad) or have an inner refillable pad, while pre-ink stamps soak the stamp ink inside their rubber and release the ink with a simple press. Both stamps are refillable, but you need to select the correct type of ink. There are some pads that are rubber gel pads rather than felt pads, so these pads will need oil-based ink too.PIGMENT vs DYE INK FORMULA. Dye ink is the classic scrapbooking ink.
