    Earth One Continues to Shine

*by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2015*

Warning: Major spoilers from Volume 1 and minor spoilers for Volume 2 ahead! You have been warned...I just finished the newest outing for Earth One's Caped Crusader, and boy am I pleased. For those of you who liked volume 1, you will love this volume. For those of you who didn't, well, you'll probably not like this one, either.Six months after vol. 1, the middle of his crusade to clean up Gotham, Batman must confront the vile Riddler, whose attacks threaten Gotham's richest. To take him down Batman strengthens his alliance with Detective Gordon and reconnects with the brother sister duo, Jessica and Harvey Dent. He will also b lead to the sewers, where he meets one of the most monstrous creatures in his rogues gallery; Killer Croc.Returning from vol. 1 are Alfred, Lucious Fox, Detective Gordon, and Harvey Bullock. Also carrying over from vol. 1 is Jessica Dent and her brother Harvey, who each have much larger parts to play in vol. 2.I enjoyed this one more than the first volume for numerous reasons. The first being the death of Mayor Cobblepot hangs over the story and pops up quite often. Also the opening, which recreates the opening from the first one, shows Bruce's skills have improved since we last saw him. Killer Croc's storyline was wonderful, I look forward to seeing what they do with him in the future. There were only to things I didn't like about this volume. The twist with Two Face was a little lame if you've read Superman Earth One volume 3. Also, I didn't care for Barbara's absence, I was really looking forward to Batgirl's intro into Earth One.Another great thing about this book are the teases given for future installments. Things we have to look forward to in Batman Earth One volume 3 and beyond are: Catwoman, a Batmobile, and Two Face. Also, for you eagle eyed readers, when Batman is hanging on the train we can see Jack Napier's name spray painted on the side. Could this be a tease for the Wayne killer? Or maybe the Joker...For those of you who have read the other Earth One books, this one outshines them all. I highly recommend it to all fans of the previous book, as well as Batman fans in general. Even though there's no release date for vol. 3 yet, we do have Wonder Woman Earth One to look forward to in November.

Plot Twists and Meta-Humor Make This Sequel Even Better Than Original

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2015*

While Volume 1 of this excellent series had me interested, Volume 2 has me entranced. This sequel improves on the original in every way, and is one of the few Batman stories that has plot twists I can't predict right from the start. The story is interesting, Bruce gets some character development as he starts to resemble his mainstream counterpart more and more (as does Harvey and Gordon), and the artwork remains as awesome as ever. One of the things that makes Volume 2 an improvement over Volume 1 is its humor and self-aware attitude without being obnoxious or tongue-in-cheek about it. Both Alfred and Killer Croc mock the idea of fighting crime in a bat costume, and my absolute favorite part of the whole story is Gordon being flabbergasted by Batman's need to put bats on absolutely everything he owns. It even pokes a little fun at the classic "bat-vanish," where Batman seemingly disappears every time Gordon turns his back. But as I said before, the absolute best part of Volume 2 are its plot twists, of which there are many. Most of the twists and turns in this book relate to taking expectations readers have of certain characters, mainly villains, and turning them on their head. If you think you know what's going to happen to certain characters because of your prior knowledge of Batman stories, you are in for some serious surprises.

    Maybe better than Vol 1…

*by R***T on Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2021*

I go back and forth with which Volume of the series is the best. But either way, all three of these books are worth buying and reading and re-reading.I’m not a comic book expert. But during quarantine I picked up a ton of Batman graphic novels (mostly because I love Sin City and so Frank Miller’s “Batman Year One” was an obvious next step). I’m very picky with writing and art and the Earth One series is easily some of the best writing in Batman history. Geoff Johns is an industry leader, so that’s no surprise. What drew me to this series specifically is that they are being used as inspiration for the upcoming “The Batman” movie (especially since in THIS book, Vol 2, the Riddler is the main villain, as he is in the movie). This volume continues the story of Batman’s beginnings. Volume 1 establishes his clumsy, naive start. In part 2, he’s established himself as a vigilante and hero, and begins to work alongside Jim Gordon to stop the Riddler who’s bombing Gotham.I love the art too. It’s kind of classic Americana pulp style. It reminds me of a cleaner, slicker 70s detective style.Buy it. Buy all 3.
