How do I test the thermostat for accuracy to ensure its not user error?** A: There are two methods to test the thermometer for accuracy: 1. Ice Bath Test (Ice + Water) - Easy Method Fill a glass or cup to the top with ice. Add pre-chilled / cold water to just below the top of the ice. Stir for about 15 seconds. Insert the thermometer probe into the center of the ice bath and sit gently for another 15 seconds. Keep the probe surrounded by the ice water and move constantly. An accurate thermometer will read 32°F or 0°C. 2. Boiling Water Test - Hard Method The boiling water test is more complicated because you must take altitude and atmospheric pressure into account when calculating the boiling point for your location. An accurate thermometer will read 212°F or 100°C in boiling water at sea level under normal atmospheric conditions, but you probably don't live at sea level and your atmospheric pressure varies constantly from day to day. You insert the thermometer (take off the cord winder first) into the meat when you first start cooking it. When I do this, I will usually smoke multiple cuts and sizes of meats. I currently have 4 - 5 different wireless thermometers going at the same time, which means 4 - 5 different transmitter bases and receivers. It can get pretty confusing and cluttered at times.I saw this 6 probe bluetooth thermometer and took the plunge. If I can get away with 1 transmitter base with 6 probes, I will be a very happy cook, and to be able to connect to phone or ipad over bluetooth, even better!!Unfortunately, due to this LONG Canadian Winter, I may have to wait a while before I can actually put the thermometer to work with the smoker.I did however want to power it up, connect all the probes and check the accuracy as well as familiarize myself with the app.From previous experience I have found that with multiple thermometers, they have NEVER read the same temperature, but with these 6 probes, I was very pleasantly surprised that they all read the same temps and they were all accurate when compared to my trusty Thermapen. (see the pics and judge for yourself).Now my take on the App, download it, open it, very easy to operate, you can assign colours to the number probes, set each one for different temp alarms or ranges, meaning, I could for example have 5 different cuts of meat cooking with preset temps or customized temp alarms, and then use the 6th probe for the pit to monitor the cooking temp in which a minimum and maximum range can be set.Lastly there is an alarm that will go off if the bluetooth connection is lost!I am extremely happy with this purchase and cannot wait to start bbq'ing with it for real! This is a must for any serious Sunday cooks who wants to impress his/her guests. Furthermore, and for health reason, you want this item, especially if you smoke meat and fish with cold smoke, as it needs to be kept at specific range of temperature.
