My response to that is that if you are performing an activity that involves grabbing and applying your full weight to hard, rough surfaces for an hour or two, how is the softness of the chalk even a concern? I just break the crumbles up with my fingers, which actually helps coat my fingers better, in my opinion, and I am good to go. I also think it is handy when I get a large chunk into my chalk bag, because I can just rub it gently between my fingers and chalk up without making my hands a sloppy, dusty mess.
