One year after Laura’s husband, Jack, killed himself, she is finally learning to live with the guilt and grief of his death. Her main concern now is taking care of their two children, but just as her own life is getting back on track, theirs seem to be jumping the rails. While Laura is busy watching her pubescent son for signs of the manic depression that drove Jack to suicide, her teenage daughter, Darcy, is falling in love with the wrong guy. With money being yet another worry, renting out Jack’s old studio seemed like an easy answer to at least one of her problems, but that was before she started falling in love with her handsome young boarder, putting her increasingly at odds with her daughter. Written alternately from the mother’s and daughter’s viewpoints, Thomson’s first novel treats issues of loss, mental illness, adolescence, and sexuality with great openness and sensitivity. Fans of Kristin Hannah and Holly Chamberlin will similarly appreciate this hopeful, uplifting story about family, friendships, and a second chance at love. --Cortney Ophoff

    A thought-provoking page-turner

EQUILIBRIUM is a thought-provoking page-turner about a family struggling to deal with the stigma of suicide and the legacy of bipolar disorder. I love fiction that chips away at the stereotypes of mental illness, and I was thrilled that the author focused on the genetic component. (My genetic soup is full of mental illness!) Despite the dark subject matter, however, this is a very hopeful read. All of the characters are fabulous, but I think Darcy, the fifteen-year-old, is my favorite. She's so unexpected. I loved her voice and the contradictory decisions she makes throughout the story. She's a wonderful combination of troubled teen, grieving daughter, and old soul. And, on some level, this is her coming-of-age story.

Be prepared to become a part of a family seeking stability and love.

Equilibrium was good reading. The author was in the heads of her characters and followed them as they wound their ways through complicated relationships. I enjoyed the journeys of each character as each one found his or her own equilibrium in life, much the way we all do. I liked having a peaceful read, but sometimes was on the edge of my chair as some potentially bad acts could have destroyed a young woman. Exciting, but on the whole, real and wholesome.
