The effort depends on how the shelving unit was assembled, on the tool you use for disassembly, on your manual dexterity, and on the strength of your hands. How easily a shelving unit can be disassembled varies. As the unit is assembled, the top of each lower leg should be pressed toward the outside of the leg slot in the shelf. To do this, I twist a flat-bladed screwdriver gently in the slot. I do not use the screwdriver as a lever or use a lot of force. The top of each lower leg should be outside two shallow vertical ridges in each slot. (You have to look closely to see the ridges.) That leaves room for the upper leg, which contains the latch. I figured this out by doing it wrong, and having to overcome a lot of friction when I removed the upper leg. If you use a tool like the tail-end of a sturdy discarded toothbrush to depress the latch at the bottom of each upper leg (that is, under the shelf) while holding the upper leg in your other hand and pushing down on the shelf with your thumb, disassembly can be straightforward.
