## Description

By now the world knows that Seagate Desktop 7200 drives, from the world's premier storage provider, deliver years of reliable service and high performance. The ideal choice for workstations, desktop RAID, gaming PCs, high-end PCs, mainstream PCs and USB/FireWire/eSATA external storage. After years of pioneering research at Seagate, perpendicular recording is now a proven technology. It increases capacity and dependability by storing data vertically, rather than horizontally. And vertically stored data bits mean increased data density which means higher performance to increase productivity. This drive delivers excellent power savings without sacrificing drive or system performance, giving customers the ability to manufacture PC systems and external storage systems that meet energy savings requirements. Seagate hard drives have long been produced with the environment in mind, and not just with low power consumption. With Seagate and the Desktop drive, our customers can have the best of both worlds, top hard-drive performance and the satisfaction of knowing they are using a high-capacity drive with a very small eco-footprint.What's in the box: Seagate 3 TB Desktop 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (7200rpm) and 2 Year Limited Warranty.

Review: Great drive. Firmware update was easy. - For those of you who are not aware of it, this drive has some kind of firmware problem that makes the drive chirp from time to time. Whatever the problem it, Seagate fixed it with a firmware update recently. In order to update the firmware, you need to set your hard drive mode in BIOS to IDE (not AHCI), then download the bootable iso version (I don't trust microsoft to get in between me and my firmware updates). Boot from the cd the iso created, select "d" for download new firmware. Wait 20 seconds or so. When it says it's done, turn off your computer. At bootup, enter BIOS and switch back to AHCI. You are done. I haven't had any chirping or any other problems with this drive. It's 3 platters only, with 1TB each. This means is consumes less power than its brethren with more platters, and the performance is good. I have it hooked to a 6.0 GbPS SATA port. Runs great, quiet, etc. In the past I've always bought Western Digital drives but in the wake of the flood, WD appears to be keeping its prices way high for a long time. even on their wimpy green drives. I mean, it was like 10 months ago or something, people! Good reason to switch to Seagate. Seagate, on the other hand, has lowered prices to something in the same ballpark as pre-flood levels--though they haven't progressed past where they were at the time. Anyway, I have a 1 TB version of this drive in my main computer (the firmware update said it didn't need updating) and a 3 TB version (which I updated myself) in my home fileserver. What I want to know is when is Seagate going to use these great 1TB platters in a 4 and 5 platter configuration. I already have a 4TB seagate drives (barricuda XT) that I pulled out of an external enclosure (for some reason they never sold the 4 TB version as a bare drive). It has 5 platters. Why not make 4 or 5 platter Barricudas using the 1Tb platters? It has to be trivial. I could use the space on my fileserver. By the way at the time I bought this you could get the same drive in an external enclosure for $10 less. I was very tempted to buy that and then rip it out of the enclosure, as I did my Barricuda XT, but I decided $10 was enough to pay for a valid warranty and the option of returning it if it didn't work right away. Didn't end up needing that, but better safe than sorry. I will check back in and mark it down if the drive goes down or misbehaves any time soon. If you don't see that, it's still working like a champ.
Review: So far no issues, great performing drive - I bought two of these 3TB drives from desertcart, about four months apart. I use them as the data drives in my system. I was extremely wary when shopping for replacements for my Samsung 1TB drives, so many bad reviews for both Western Digital and Seagate. However, I've not experienced any issues with either drive thus far. As I've mentioned in my other drive reviews, I will update this review if any problems with these drives occur. After seeing so many negative reviews when shopping for drives, I decided I should write reviews for all of my drives so that both the good and the bad drives get represented. PERFORMANCE ------ Stellar performance, definitely an upgrade over my pair of 1TB Samsung drives these replaced. Using Crystal Disk Mark, I see sequential reads and writes of about 180 MB/second. In real world transfers, I typically see 100 MB/second. A significant portion of my data is compromised of photos, RAW image files from my Nikon D800 which are huge, around 40 MB per image. On my old drives, Lightroom would take a lot longer to generate previews of the RAW files. Every time I made an edit, Lightroom read the RAW file from disk and regenerated the preview. The faster transfer speed on this drive was a significant improvement, previews are generated much faster which makes Lightroom feel like it is running a lot faster. NOISE ----- These drives aren't the quietest. They have a lot of torque and exhibit a whirring noise when spinning. The seek noise can be pretty annoying without proper isolation. With the hard drive trays in my case, it was very difficult to tame the vibrations. I ended up suspending the drives using elastic cord. I can still hear the seek noise, but just slightly. The drive is pretty quiet when suspended. WARRANTY ----- Sadly there is only a 2 year warranty at the time of this writing (7/2/2013). Seagate changes this without notice. I suppose the positive spin is we at least have a two year warranty instead of the one year warranty many drives had after the tragic floods in Thailand significantly crippled the HDD supply chain in 2011. Pro Tip: If you have the desertcart Visa card, use that to buy this. It extends the manufacturer warranty by one year for free. Other cards may do this too, but you'll have to ask about this benefit. OVERALL ----- So far my experience with these drives has been nothing but great. Outstanding performance and a good value, I can happily recommend the Seagate 7200.14 3TB drive.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: what is bare drive?**
A: I am sorry if I didn't get your question correctly but If you mean what does "bare drive" mean, in means that it's the drive only. You have to put it in your PC Case and connect the cables. bare drive vs. external drives which come with a case and you connect them usually through a USB cable. If you mean the capacity I got the 2 gig version = 1.8 gb

**Q: Do these come with SATA III cables to connect to your motherboard or do you have to purchase those separately?**
A: **Note** There is no distinction between SATA I/II/III cables. Any SATA cable (quality, not junk) will work with all 3 standards, just as fast: http://www.serialata.org/documents/SATA-6Gbs-Fast-Just-Got-Faster.pdf

**Q: how do you get it to boot or install a OS on it when it says**
A: With the drive installed and a SATA line plugged in along with the power connector you then turn the power on. As the machine powers up you will be given the opportunity to get into the BIO's by hitting the DEL key. Once there make sure that the drive is recognized by the BIO's and that you have made the changes to date and time and that you DVD/CD player/recorder is recognized. Place your WINDOWS or LINEX operating system disk in your DVD/CD then follow the directions. The operating system disk will format your hard drive. PS don't forget to set the BOOT order so that your system will boot off of the DVD/CD drive. Set your hard drive as second boot device. Once the operating system is installed power down and then back up so that you can reset the hard drive to 1st device to boot from and the DVD/CD to 2nd boot device.

**Q: It's pictured without a cover to somewhat seal the hard drive discs. Does it come with the cover?**
A: The hard drives arrive fully enclosed and ready to use. Not sure why the photo is posted the way it is, however you will have no issues.Hope this helps.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So far no issues, great performing drive

### ⭐ TOTAL CRAP and WARRANTY SUCKS! UPDATE: 4TB drives are really quiet, run cooler, and very reliable compared to 3TB models.
*by J***U on February 13, 2014*

UPDATE: I bought some that were "Sold by Oceanside Store and Fulfilled by Amazon" and the Seagate web site said they were OEM drives that did not have an end-user warranty!! SCAM! NOTE: THESE REVIEWS ARE ALL MIXED TOGETHER FOR VARIOUS GENERATIONS OF WHAT ARE VERY DIFFERENT DRIVES! AMAZON< PLEASE STOP MIXING 3TB reviews with 4TB reviews, they are entirely different models with very different failure rates. UPDATE: These 4TB Seagate drives are pretty nice for backups and video storage, etc. I use my drives with a drivepool software package that does a few different things: 1) Pools several drives into 1 logical drive, so that filing is much easier in one volume, rather than 8 separate volumes, for example. This allows me to keep 1 "HD VIDEOS" folder, not 8 HD VIDEOS folders on 8 separate volumes, and allows me to search it as 1 folder. 2) Allows very precise backup organization, so family photos, tax records, can be backed up, and other stuff I don't care about, is not duplicated. It automates all duplication of ONLY the folders I want duplicated. Some very important files, I keep 3 copies. And most important, the new 4TB drives are known to be VASTLY MORE RELIABLE than the previous generation 3TB drives. ALSO, it comes with a 2 year warrenty rather than the previous 1 year warrenty on the 3TB drives. This is a policy change for Seagate and is testiment that these newer drives are much better than 2 year old drives, made in new China factories, immediately after the floods in Thailand. OLD REVIEW FOR 3TB DRIVE: Very disappointed; have had good and bad experiences with both Seagate and WD, and decided the 3TB 7200 was too tempting to pass up. I got 2 from one retailer, and 1 from another, to try to divide the batch I was ordering from, since I had heard from friends of bad experiences purchasing drives together in the same batch (they both went bad at same time, etc). Of 3 I have purchased, in 13 months, I have lost the first, with no opportunity to recover it. It is simply not recognized by the machine, and actually hangs windows if I attempt to use it. It shows up on desktop as a drive with a letter assignment but no space associated, and if I try to work with it in the Storage:Disk Managment, it hangs windows. I did have a short notice of a problem when I used CrystalDiskInfo to look at the status of my drives. I actually purchased this drive intending to test it for a FULL YEAR before trusting it, but the ULTIMATE PUT OFF was finding out from Seagate after 1 year it is considered out of warranty??? Drives should become more reliable over time, not less! Drives are getting cheaper per GB but at what cost to consumers? Who wants to lose 3TB of data all at once? Thank god I only wrote backup data to this drive and then let it spin for a year. BUT, I have a sister drive that is also reporting same/similar issues in CrystalDiskInfo so I will be backing that drive up immediately! It's got real data on it! Don't trust these drives with more than your torrents and porno collection, that is for damn sure. WD RED, here I come! (I've read they come with 3 YR warranty, does anyone know if that is true?) http://smile.amazon.com/WD-Red-NAS-Hard-Drive/dp/B008JJLW4M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392264098&sr=8-2&keywords=western+digital+red
