Yes, you have to peel the magnetic pieces off and stick them to the back of the tiles, which will take all of 5 minutes. No big deal in my opinion. The one thing that I didn't like was that is many cases you have the exact amount of pieces you need to complete the puzzle. This means that if you lose a piece (which we did), you might not be able to complete it. It also means that 2 kids can't play at once. I only have one but I could see how that could be frustrating if you had 2 kids who had to take turns. I do believe however that you can purchase extra pieces, so that might be worth doing if it's going to be a shared toy. It's a great tool. I would recommend it for any children old enough not to put the small pieces in their mouths. I have the magnetic kind and the one that's not. I would recommend the magnetic because your not always having to readjust the pieces. They move too easily, especially with little hands, when they're not magnetic. It only takes a few minutes to stick the magnetic pieces on the backs. I would recommend buying extra magnetic pieces because it seems impossible not to lose a few. With my 3 and 4 year old grandchildren I always work it with them so it can be a teaching time about shapes also and that way they're less likely to end up tossing them around.
