I had this issue and was able to sand down the two sides until even. For extra durability/longevity, I'd highly recommend screwing the two halves together without going through that gap (where the cord is) in the center. Just make sure one screw is longer in the wider half and shorter in the narrow half so that it doesn't poke out of the other side. Unless you're lucky, it won't be perfect and you may have to modify it a little bit. Overall, very great value for $20! It's convenient to carry around, and with a couple of minor tweaks, it became one of my favorite training apparatuses. I use it for hanging and pull-ups and have seen serious improvements in my grip strength as well as endurance. One thing you'll notice hanging for the first time is that it's quite unstable. The wood is not smooth and coarse. I have to file off certain rough parts and edges. The quality and workmanship of the actual product is nowhere close to what is show in the photos.
