It replaced a heavy, bulky glass globe that was a nightmare to remove in order to change the bulbs. I needed a shade that had a hole in the center for the pull chain. Not as easy to find as you would think. I found a glass shade but it was so heavy it was pulling the lighting mount off the fan. I found this diffuser which works perfectly. The center hole was 3/8 but I drilled the hole to 1/2 inch. The disc is heavy plastic and comes lined with paper on both sides. I drilled the hole and peeled the paper.
