Good Novel, But Quite A Few Errors Compared to Other Series

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2019*

Love the series, but this translation is surprisingly lower quality than I expected after reading Killing Slimes for 300 years. In this book, there were more typos/grammatical errors relative to other books. Specifically, I remember 3 issues in the first 100 pages. This book has been out for ~3 years, but the grammatical issues have not been fixed as a revision? Interesting.I already knew I liked the story from the anime, but reading this and going back to watch the anime again, I prefer the novel. There are scenes that are done better in the anime, but overall, most of Tatsuya's life and introduction is done significantly better in the novel. Simple things like Morisaki explaining his distaste for Tatsuya using 2 CADs just make the story better in my opinion. The details felt natural in the description which novels like Average Abilities volume 1 had some issues with.Last complaint I will mention is with the random "(?)"s that show up throughout the book. Like I have no idea why they are there. Worst comes to worst, it should have been a translators note added as a footnote. This threw me off everytime I saw it because I did not know the purpose of the symbols.Overall, I do understand I am being a bit picky, but this is a bigger publisher and a small publisher like Sol Press has significantly fewer grammatical errors and typos in the "Strongest Gamer" novel which is of similar length. My issues with the grammar and typos may not be relevant to you, so I do recommend the book to almost anyone interested in the story. I just expect more out of a relatively large publisher in the industry. As for the seller and delivery, it was timely and arrived as expected; no issues there. All issues are with the publisher.

    Fantastic Opening Volume

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2016*

Unlike a few multi part novels set in a magical and science fiction world, Irregular at Magic High School, starts off fast. It doesn't use a key action set piece like other series but rather eases into seeing the numerous characters interact with each other. I found myself not bored with how this started. Perhaps it is because the way that it is handled reminded me of how it is in real school in which you have the base excitement of a new school year with people willing and ready to talk and interact with each other. Perhaps what benefited this the most was that the writer had the key characters immediately enter into a student organization (student council) immediately upon starting. This immediately gave them a clear goal to tackle and also opened the doors for a few more issues to tackle. This helped to build the school up into something more than just a standard setting but into something that could grow and evolve as it is being further developed. For example, we immediately see how the world has affected the school, the two class system in the school has affected it as well as its students, as well as some of the ways that the school can bypass the way the world works. Its really good.Overall the book is a fantastic addition to the genre. The writing is pretty good with, at my count, only three obvious typos in the 208 pages. Color pages had translated text, and an afterword from the author and Reki Kawahara was provided.

One of the best light novel series I've read

*by A***T on Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2016*

So let me first say that, yes I am a fan of this series and thus I've read the fan translations of the books through #14 and watched the anime several times. The thing that I like so much about this series despite its flaws, is that the author took the time to clearly outline how magic works and how it has influenced the world since the late 90's. Then he uses the system he developed for magic and how the world has developed to spin a tale about a collection of characters. Granted, they're not perfect (quite a few of them can be generalized within the first five minutes) and they can act trope-ish from time to time; however, I'd argue that when they're combined with the world the author has created, the series becomes quite compelling. The two biggest problems I have with this series is that the anime really didn't do the siblings thoughts, feelings, and even actions in one brief scene justice - and since it came out before this series was translated, it will put the characters in a worse light then they deserve. The second is that the author beat around the bush explaining how the siblings came to live together and why Tatsuya is the way he is - this doesn't happen until book eight. Once he does explain things, then I felt like the siblings can viewed in a much better light.
