The water needs to flow through the filter before returning to the tank in order for it to work. You have to cut this pad to fit your filter system. I would not clip it to the wall of the filter box but lay it flat in the bottom. Hope this helps. **Q: Why does the ad show the 12 X 12 size but not offer it for sale?** A: It’s a generic photo. Amazon does that sometimes. I haven’t found a good source for the 12x12 pads just yet. **Q: Is this safe for an established reef aquarium?** A: After spending years in the hobby, both fresh and salt water, I can honestly say I can't think of another product that would be more useful or valuable to have on hand than the Incomparable poly pad!
