You can use just a SIM card in the lax20 or use normal internet via ethernet and the SIM card as backup. If normal Ethernet fails, SIM card takes over. Equally you if you have something like an unlimited EE SIM card you can just use that on it’s own. The SIM card bit is just a new way for your router to get internet, instead of something like BT or Virgin. Anything beyond that is normal. You can connect laptops, iPads, Apple TV’s, sky q box, Sonos, smart devices, anything that accepts WiFi. Doesn’t matter it’s WiFi 6 everything still works. New WiFi 6 devices will just connect better than the old stuff. The SIM card 4G bit is just another way the router receives internet. Your question is like asking how many devices can connect if I was using BT or Virgin. It’s no different. The 4G bit is incoming internet. The devices connecting to WIFI bit doesn’t rely on 4G or BT or Virgin. Knowing that, the answer is at least 50. The Netgear Nighthawk router has given me faster connection speeds and instant connectivity with webpages TV apps et cetera. It was also incredibly easy to set up and phone support was very helpful and very fast. ### ⭐ Router unreliable/didn’t work *by S***R on 6 July 2021* After weeks of dealing with Netgear technical support, the router has been returned to Amazon for a refund. The SIM card would often not be recognised in the router, though when placed in a phone works fine. This is after numerous Factory Resets, not just turning it off (over 100 during the 4 weeks!). So meant setting the router back up again, but this didn’t work all the time. I was using the router on 4G only, not with a broadband supplier, and it didn’t appear to cope with this (though as advertised it should). Checked with SIM provider to make sure everything was working their end, and went via second line support who confirmed this. After hours on hold trying to speak to Netgear technical support I finally got some emails in response. Their only solution was to try and install older Firmware or send back to Amazon for a refund. I don’t know if this was a one off, or an ongoing problem, but personally I wouldn’t waste your money as clearly there are lots of bugs and the 4G modem in the router appears flakey. From the WiFi side of things, it did cover the whole house, shame it didn’t have an internet connection half the time (this wasn’t due to the 4G signal in my area).
