I personally, would NOT expect the 18 gauge wire to carry more than 5 amps AND the male plug most likely would heat up if you put more than 5 amps into/through it. We usually go south in November, but with this COVID-19 ... don't know when we're going back down, etc. I use it to connect a solar power device - to keep the vehicle's battery charged from the 7 months we're up north. Seems to me, the distance from the switching mechanism to the plug was about 1 foot between the aforementioned. I might add, this device IS VERY WELL MADE! If you're concerned about extending the distance from the switching mechanism to the plug ... just add an extension to the 'male' plug, with a female to a male extension to suit your needs.
