My boyfriend(an experienced fisherman) and me (a newbie) both love this rod however it does act up on occasion like the other day when I was reeling in a large fish. I ended up loosing the fish, unclear as to reasoning why but I know I felt something snap in the reel and the rod acted up for sometime after!!! The hand retrieve is for both right or left-handed. You can search for video tutorials online on how to switch the handles for Daiwa products or spinning reels. **Q: Is it for saltwater or freshwater?** A: Freshwater. I would hesitate getting this combo. The reel has a plastic drag gear.
