Review: A Wonderful Machine for Hobbyists and Professionals Alike! - I would normally be hesitant about making such a big purchase without trying it out first, but I've used a very similar model at the sewing studio I go to and already knew it was a great machine. This particular model is made in Japan whereas the 8700 is made in China. I figured for $100 more I couldn't go wrong with the Japanese made model. I specifically bought this machine from desertcart because it comes fully assembled at no extra cost (a lot of other online retailers charge you extra for shipping an assembled machine). I'm pretty handy, but there are so many little parts to put together I didn't want to bother assembling it myself. It comes on a pallet and you should have moving help as it is extremely heavy. I hired some movers to bring it upstairs to my sewing room. All you have to do is screw on the thread holder, add oil and plug it in- it is ready to sew! I will also add that it comes with a pack of needles, a bobbin, bobbin case, two screwdrivers and a bottle of oil. I bought extra bobbins and presser feet as it only comes with one. It does come with instructions, but I did a quick search online and found some very useful online tutorials about how to thread. Once you get the hang of it, it's easier than a home machine. As far as performance, this machine can't be beat. It sews over thick layers of fabric without any complaint. I'm currently sewing a historically accurate Renaissance gown which requires lots of layers of fabric and trim- this machine just zips through it without a worry. It is extremely quiet and has an adjustable speed motor so you can turn it on low until you get more comfortable using it. Another great feature is the built-in bobbin winder- you can sew and wind a bobbin at the same time and it will automatically stop once it's full. If you are a hobby sewer like me, you might be wondering if you actually need an industrial machine. The answer is you probably don't NEED it, but it sure does make sewing a much more enjoyable experience. If you compare the cost of this machine to high-end home machines like Bernina or Pfaff, it is a no-brainer. The caveat is this machine only does one stitch- straight- but it does it better than any home machine can. I can't even remember the last time I used a stitch other than straight on my home machine anyway. I kept my Singer home machine just in case I ever want to do a fancy stitch, but I don't see myself using it very much now that I have the Juki. Now I find myself planning a lot more projects as this machine has made sewing a joy and not a frustration!
Review: Sewing Machine - At first my wife was dubious because of the size of the servo motor after looking (and listening) to a clutch motor for years but was happy after she used it even commenting on how quiet it is. I put it together in about 6 hours following the videos, the video for the table was a slightly different model, and the head video didn't have any oral instructions, not a big problem but the first two (table and motor) did. They called before shipment explain that only the head is made in Japan, the rest in China because the listing only said Japan. He also gave me the phone number to call in case of problems.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Include table?**
A: Yes. This one comes with the table, small drawer, thread stand, and very quiet servo motor.

**Q: What is the difference between DDL-5550 and the DDL-8700?**
A: Hello, Ms. Donna. I had the same question before I ordered the DDL-5550. To find the answer, I wrote an email to Juki America Inc. Here was the response (just so you can hear it from the 'horses mouth'),"That is correct, the DDL8700 is made is China and the DDL5550N is made inJapan. That is basically the only difference in the machine."Regards,Janet M. MaganaAsst. Sales Manager - North AmericaIndustrial & Home Sewing DivisionJuki America, Inc.So, the question I asked myself was, if there is such a price difference, will there be a quality difference? I went with the 5550 and have not regretted it. I have used Chinese made machines in the Army to repair parachutes and, maybe we just had some bad ones but, I was constantly adjusting them. I've not had to touch this one yet with a screw driver. Just turn down the servo motor (if you're not used to a machine like this) and take it easy. After using this, many folks don't go back to regular home machines.

**Q: Do the feed dogs lower for free motion quilting?**
A: It CAN be done. You have to tilt the machine away from you to access the screw for the feed dogs. Loosen it, and they will drop down then tighten the screw. The only problem is, when you want to put them back up, you can't just set them as high as they will go. The valley of the teeth should be level with the top of the needle plate in the up stroke. So, Joyce was right that it is a no frills machine, but it can be done. Just not recommended unless you've worked on these machines some before.

**Q: Do you need to purchase industrial thread?**
A: You don't have to use industrial thread. We've ran plain old Coates And Clarkes dual purpose thread through it. You just need to set the tension differently. Thread thickness should ideally be based on needle size though and needle size should be based loosely on fabric type and thickness and desired appearance. So, a size 16-18 needle should probably use around size 69 thread. Size 14-16 needles (which I think this machine comes with) should use around size 33 thread. I simply find it easier to use industrial thread due to it being a standardized size and strength where the normal home machine thread is not really. But yes, you CAN use just about any thread you like. You may just have some feeding and locking issues if it's too thin. A great resource for industrial thread and information about that thread is The Thread Exchange. Just do an internet search.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Missing part
*by J***N on August 28, 2018*

This is the 2nd time we have ordered these machines. The first time the 2 that we ordered were great. This time one of the machines was missing the needle thread guide pin. It is worth purchasing the part instead of sending the whole machine back but for the price we would want a complete package.
