Review: Many useful programs available - Spectacular and versatile calculator. Many useful programs available, but make sure you order a small SD card if you intend to use programs though, as it will not function with any SD card larger than 2 gb, and most available at stores exceed this now. Will take some practice getting used to as it has a less user friendly interface than comparable Casio or TI models, but it is much more powerful and versatile for much less.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A sterling little performer
*by B***G on December 28, 2014*

The Pros: * An impressive calculator, especially for its price. * The most functions I've seen (2,500 I think), with plenty of others synthesisable. * USB cable to connect to the computer. * Provides a Flash (non-volatile memory) storage area with about 677 Kb initially free. * Thankfully it has a SD card slot, if you can still find SDMC cards. * Awesome programming languages available, and even supports C programming if you use external tools. * Provides a filesystem with folders. * Uses 4 standard AAA and 1 Backup battery (CR2032). * A sturdy fabric case with a magnetic catch is provided. * Keyboard is clicky, not spongy. The Cons: * No colour display, but does provide 16 greyscale 131 pixels across, 80 pixels down. * Limited memory in comparison to later calculators (233 Kb), though better than most. * Only a QuickStart manual was provided. The other manuals are only available as downloads. * UserRPL and SysRPL have a very steep learning curve, though they are very powerful. * The serial connection over USB is flakey, and you can only copy individual files around. * Limited support for connections from Linux. * Battery lifetime isn't as long as other calculators, but still better than modern equivalents. * It's not a TI. It's better, but it doesn't have the support from the educational community that TI has. * SDHC cards are not supported, only SDMC. That means cards that are larger than 4Gb simply won't work in the calculator. I got lucky recently, and picked up this calculator for only $85. List price from HP is still $129, or thereabouts. Where I live, I would have been paying three times that amount. I'm pretty happy I finally have an HP calculator again. I once had a second-hand HP-34C, and have missed the unique clicky keys ever since. As many other people have already reported, this calculator keyboard has mostly fixed the issues that plagued the 49G. Keys make an obvious click feel, and don't double-click when you hit a single button. The case, while not hard, does look good. It won't break or develop weaknesses like the slide-on cases for other calculators will do, though it won't stop buttons from being accidentally pressed with books in a bag. This could be perhaps solved with a thin plastic shim inside the case, but you'd have to design that yourself. So far I'm finding that while I love the abilities of RPN, I'm still getting my head around the way UserRPL works. If you ever buy this instead of the Prime, get the manuals, and the Advanced User's Reference, as those will help you make the most of this calculator. There are plenty of older HP48 programs that will work, though not everything will, especially programs making use of SysRPL functions that may have changed between the 48S/SX/G/GX and the 50G. There are some known issues with the software that connects the calculator to the computer. In some cases, it doesn't really work well, and in others, it performs well enough, if you know what settings to use. It would pay to do a little reading, or simply use the SD card with a card reader if your computer has one installed. I'm happy.
