The M3 has only 2 buttons for shifting modes, so they require holding the buttons down longer or shorter to get in different modes or to accept or eliminate data. This is cumbersome at best, but with my newer unit, I have learned what to do and not do to reset and record mileage.I have also learned not to play with it during a ride, since pressing too long or short or pressing the wrong button may require calling up the manual on your phone and spending 20 minutes computering, not riding.I learned that the more expensive Meilan M1 actually records your altitude profile, while the $30 Meilan M3 gives an instantaneous altitude reading. Meilan has an M2 unit that is slightly larger and does more (things like cadence and heart rate with bluetooth, and a Blade model and an M4 model that are larger still and have buttons on top of the unit. All are priced $56. The next level is $100+ for the M1 and Finder models that both offer navigation via smartphone app, plus all of the other optional things like power meter, hr, cadence etc..The Positives: I like the use of GPS to provide speed , mileage and altitude data, without having wires or a remote wireless sensor with separate battery, that can go bad. Admittedly, when cycling under trees, your GPS speed reading will read low. Interestingly, Meilan's higher priced units with cadence and speed go back to using remote sensors with batteries and sending units. This is great for those who approach riding and personal fitness as a scientific project. I was a scientist for 43 years and I ride to get away from charts and graphs. The M3 has just the basics. Also, the unit seems to have the battery power for a hundred mile day before recharging, at least when new. It can be carried in your pocket to record length of hikes and dog walks, and can provide paddling speed or sailing speed. What other bike computer can do that? And the cost is not hundreds, but $30. They have also improved their mount, such that the earlier units could only be mounted on the handlebar, but now can be mounted on bar or stem. When turned on, It can take a half to 3/4 mile to acquire the GPS signal, if you begin riding immediately. You can, of course, turn it on first and give it a few minutes to acquire signal before riding. Conclusion: For its' size and price and general reliability, plus its ability to be used for hiking and paddling, and even model car and aircraft racing, if you can put up with its' funky short press, long press, left button, right button navigation, it is an amazing little unit! (My first mileage recorder was a small mechanical box that mounted to the wheel hub, with a star shaped extension that a peg mounted on your wheel would hit and move with every turn of your wheel. So many hits against the star would indicate a mile.
