Review: A Very Funny Movie, Finally Released on DVD - First, this movie didn't get the attention and recognition it deserved when it came out. I hadn't even heard of it until it came out on pay TV (SelecTV in Southern California, if anyone remembers that), and liked it so much that we watched it two or three times. What a cast it had: Alan Arkin, Sid Caesar, Rob Reiner, Vincent Gardenia and others in a delightfully silly and hilarious story...what was not to like? Then it seemed to vanish from the face of the earth, as I couldn't find it in any video format for decades. And now, lo and behold, it's been released on DVD, sort of. By that I mean that it's on a recordable DVD format, DVD-R, which is a perfectly legitimate way to release films on disc on an on-demand basis. Excellent films that are not deemed worthy of a full release in mass replicated form can be manufactured one by one, making them available to their audience. I think it's a great use of recordable DVD technology. As for the transfer, it's first rate, with very clear and spotless video. Kudos to Fox for giving it the attention this film deserves. If you're a fan of Alan Arkin's work, let alone Sid Caesar and Rob Reiner's, you should not miss this film. It's very funny and very entertaining. Review: Insanely Irreverent, Ironic and LOL Funny! - A very funny film that had limited release and was never converted to VHS. Great Cast! When I saw this the first time with a GF, in 1977, I laughed so hard that when I drove home, my contact lenses were floating out of my eyes! I had no idea that many prominent "movie critics" hated this and gave it the lowest possible reviews. I saw it a few days later with my whole family and we were doubled over with laughter. Primarily because of Leonard Maltin's "Bomb" review, it never was converted to a VHS tape. Once in a blue moon, it was broadcast on some independent TV station. 12 years later, as a professional chauffeur, I had the privilege to drive Sid Ceasar from Fort Lauderdale Airport to his hotel and I asked him about the film. He said it was great fun to make and he thought that Studio/Distributor politics and lack of promotional money helped bury the film. Remember, the author of the book that this was based on (Robert Klane) also wrote "Where's Poppa."
