It is soft to the touch and holds heat for a long time. It works well in providing relief for more of an ache than an actual pain. However, there were two things that were not so good. First, upon opening, it has a pretty bad smell. I ended up having to put it outside for two days. Second, heating it in the microwave for 2 minutes (as directed in the instructions) is too long. This made it too hot. I would recommend 90 seconds, maybe 100. What is very nice about this heating pad are the two handles.
