All three light modes work just fine. I generally use it as a twisty, and can turn it on and off with one hand. I love the size of the light, and the fact that it uses AA batteries. The low mode is fine for most uses, but if more light is needed, the medium usually does the trick. And it's comforting to know that the high mode is there for those times I want or need to light up an area the size of my backyard--because it will do it. I removed the clip, and attached the lanyard. I can either drop it in a pocket or attach the light to my belt or belt loop. While returning from the bathroom in the middle of the night I place my thumb over the lens, and twist it on. The resultant reddish light is more than enough to find my bed without waking or bothering my wife or affecting my night vision. I decided to pick up one of the newer ones to add to the rotation. My conclusion: It is a good continuation of the original, but the lowest brightness setting is weaker than I would like, and is harder to hold. I have not yet killed the first battery, so I can't comment on runtime.
