Puts our recliners back to work (pun intended).

*by G***G on Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2013*

Couldn't be happier with this product. The pull cables to both of our recliners broke 2 years ago. I never thought about replacing the cable (vs. replacing the whole sectional, which was not an option financially) until I surfed around amazon one day and this product popped up in the "also viewed by other customers" menu. I was originally looking for leather cleaners, go figure...I was excited to see a viable fix to our problem but reluctant to try to fix it myself. After 2yrs, I figured the worst that could happen is that we can pay someone else to install it for us. Either option is cheaper than buying a new sectional. Plus, our temp fix was to use standalone ottomans as footrests. They got in the way and took up space in the room, so I bit the bullet and ordered one of these cables. I wanted to try it on one recliner before spending money on the other kit.The item arrived quickly in a plastic bag, but no instructions. A quick YouTube search showed me the gist of the process and how the mechanism worked. The hardest part was flipping the couch over (and realizing I now had to clean underneath there better than I had been doing, but I digress). Before your read the rest of the review, I want to say that it sounds more complicated than it really is. Once you see the mechanics of the cable in place, you'll see how it goes together. It took me about 20 minutes to do but I had to go get tools and lamps, etc. I'm back to order another kit to repair the other recliner of our sectional. Ours works better now than it did before. Wish I would've done this sooner!Note: I'm a DIYer, not a furniture repair person, so all the terms I use are mine and may not technically be accurate. They are, to the best of my ability, as descriptive as I can make them though. :-)Required tools:Phillips screwdriver or drill bit (and drill driver)Needle nose pliersA large flathead screwdriver is optional, but helps to compress the clip that holds the cable to the metal frame). Also optional but highly recommended is a headlamp or other bright lighting to illuminate what you're doing. Much easier to do if you can see everything and how it works together.Installation overview:*Flip the recliner over to reveal the metal reclining assembly and cabling. If you're buying this product, your D-pull should be missing at one end of the cable, and the metal "S" at the other end of the cable should still be inserted into the recliner release mechanism which locks the footrest into place.*Remove old cable by unscrewing the clip that holds the cable to the wooden frame near the D-pull and using needle nose pliers and flathead screwdriver to remove the clip which holds the other end to the metal recliner frame. The metal "S" Should slide out easily.*Install new cable by inserting the "S" into the release mechanism hole;*Insert the compression clip (see photo - the clip is near the metal "S" end of the cable) into the metal recliner mechanism frame;*Screw the black plastic bracket (see photo - the bracket with two holes for screws is located near D-pull end of the cable) into the wooden frame. The bracket on the new cable was wider than the original bracket on mine. To secure the bracket, I was able to use one of the existing holes, but had to drill a new hole into my couch's wooden frame to secure the other screw. YMMV on your bracket & whether you need to drill another hole or not.Tip: remember which hole the metal "S" part of the cable is inserted into the release mechanism. Take photos if it'll help. My recliner release mechanism had 4 holes and it was trial and error before I chose the correct hole. Luckily the second time worked.Good luck and don't wait so long like we did. When you're done, kick-up your feet and relax on your refurbished recliner. :-)Edit: Another reviewer mentioned that you can adjust the placement of the plastic mounting bracket so it doesn't stick out too far. Although this was the right length for me I agree that if it is too long, you can adjust where you mount it so this isn't a problem.

It's do-able but you need two people

*by J***G on Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2015*

My sofa is less than one year old and has these pull cables. When it broke, I called the store and they told me they would have to order it from the manufacturer and it might take up to 8 weeks! I was shocked! Then they also said I should be able to install it myself when It did get to me. Also shocking. I thought they would come and fix it for me. So I decided to see if I could purchase one online and get it faster and I found this one on Amazon. It did come very fast. It is the exact same one that my sofa seems to have. It wasn't easy to install because the sofa arms/fabric are in the way and the space is very narrow, so I have a couple of tips: you need two people--one to push in and hold back the cushion/fabric with their fingers as much as they can so you can have access to the inside sofa arm to screw it in. Remove the old one and then attach it to the bottom portion of the sofa first, then tie a string to the handle and then bring it up into the sofa seat by finding the string and pulling it up through the narrow opening that way...the space you have to work in is very, very narrow. It will be difficult to try to push the handle and cable through it using just your hands/fingers. Use your unbroken cable handle on the other side of your sofa to see exactly how it should be attached underneath. I didn't do that and attached it wrong. Had to turn the sofa back over and re-do it. I should have checked it before trying to attach it and turning the sofa over. It's all set now and works like a charm.

    Fantastic for DIYers

*by A***N on Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2016*

I was able to install this within about 15 minutes... and the longest part was actually taking the old part out. Putting on the new part (this product) took me about 4 minutes... mostly just screwing in the screws again. Then another 5 minutes of me staring at it wondering what I did wrong as there was no way it could have been that easy (... though apparently it was).My original couch part had a spring, this did not, however it seems to be working absolutely fine. I'm not sure what the spring did if this is working this well. Remember that the thing that matters the most is the distance of the exposed part at the end. Mine was 4 3/4" (like this product) but some are 3 3/4". Apparently that was all I really needed to know. lol. This was a little longer overall than my original part but it hides in the couch so no one will ever know.My one gripe is that I do not have large hands by any means and I find that it's a bit tight on my fingers trying to pull the handle. I wish it were just a littler larger for comfort's sake. That's a minor gripe, but since I have to pull it all the time, I would have preferred a handle with a bit more room. That's my one and only gripe. Great product for the price and it renewed my couch.
