Review: Great little board - I'd like to point out that even though I do have several "Cons" in the list below, they are really nit-picky things and warnings to other uses than anything that takes away from greatness of the board. Pros: - Faster than Raspberry Pi. - More RAM makes smoother user experience. - eMMC option available if you need faster storage. Cons: - No built-in Wifi, don't forget to get a dongle. - Not drop in compatible with Raspberry Pi (don't try to use Raspberry Pi OS images, they won't work). - ODROID makes a LOT of different boards and OS versions are often different between them. If you accidentally grab the wrong OS absolutely nothing will happen when you plug it in (which led me on a 2 hour trip through confusion and sadness). - Fan cycling on and off is a bit annoying (may have to try to find a way to make it just stay on).
Review: Best board! - Best one yet! I got this to run a retro gaming system. Not only does it exceed my expectations, but WOW! It runs N64 game with ease! Not one single issue. Graphics are great for the 1980s and 90s games I am running. Just wish it had built in WiFi, but other than that, AWESOME! If you are looking for a board to run Retropi perfectly, this is it. I loved the Raspberry Pi 3 and was thinking 3+ for my next build, but so glad I found the Odroid XU4 instead.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: what is include in the price?**
A: The ODROID-XU4, heatsink with cooling fan, and 5V/4A US Power Supply are included in the price. You will still need boot media to start it, and that can be downloaded from the downloads page at odroid.com and written to a microSD card or eMMC module (available separately).

**Q: Will this run Debian Jessie like the RPi3?**
A: This system is not for newbies. It appears to be a stripped down version of Debian Jessie and is a little frustrating. Should come with a display desktop that would allow people to get on the internet through the CAT5 plug which it doesn't.
The Ubuntu 16.4 is a little better. But downloading the image, it starts with user root, then password 1234. The file is write protected and when you start an adduser it comes up with an error instead of the generated user.
The author claims most of this is poorly copied images onto the card. So use a new card . . . I find that to be a cope out. There should be an easy bypass that allows you to fix the write protection and proceed which there isn't.
I got as far as a user with Debian Jessie. They did not include sudo. Meaning to get root privileges you simply go su. Then odroid as a password will get you administration privileges.
startx did not work. Did an update and it still didn't work. Tried installing a desktop. That did not work. startx still did not work.
This machine does have a faulty switch that takes a little manipulation to switch between sd and emmc.
I guess it is soldiered in wrong. Once it switches it is good.
Potentially given a real version of Pixel, this machine potentially would be a best seller. IF they take away the programming mafia and make it good for newbies to use.
Sure there are a good number of excellent programmers out there. Take a lesson from Microsoft and make it usable for the average person out there.
Take a lesson from Raspberry Pi people and have a little patience with amateurs. (I am sure that if respectable answers were given the unit would be a success.)
Potentially with a little bit of quality control this unit could be a best seller and replace the Raspberry for those of us want a little bit more.
That means money in the pocket of those that build this unit. It shouldn't be this difficult with this many roadblocks.
The Raspberry Pi is not as fast. But it is reliable.

**Q: Does the xu4 have wifi capabilities built in?**
A: No.

**Q: would this be able to run tails OS?**
A: Only if Tails OS offers an ARM distribution or the ability to compile on ARM. From a quick perusal of their website, it doesn't look like it right now.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great little board

*by D***. on June 11, 2018*

The machine itself is on the right path. It is fast. The software on the Ubuntu side is defective. When you go to open up the software and place a password it doesn't allow it. Had to hack it slightly to make it work. I created an error with a 3 letter password. It asked you to try it again and then it worked. The switch between EMMC and SD Micro Cards is also slightly badly made. You have to use an ohm meter for it to connect and work. Once it is working the machine is excellent. It is very fast compared with a Raspberry Pi 3B. The guy that wrote the software suggests it is a defect in the SD or EMMC card not his software. If that were the case my hack would not have worked. There is a simple error in the coding somewhere. It could use at least one more USB port. Two of the USB ports are 3 and one is 2. Personally I dislike the Ubuntu move to panels instead of the desktop. But I am old and remember excellent software of the past. The Pixel on the Raspberry has a configuration file that allows you to shape the desktop on a HDMI television. This software does not. That means you have to use the VGA side if you want to use a TV monitor. I suggest a kit that would allow you to develop a laptop using this card as a source. Simply because it is feasible to add an Solid state hard drive to this unit. That the arm processor is not meant to be used as a windows machine is a disappointment. I suggest Windows needs an operating system that will work on any processor. Then the windows 10 software would be universally accepted by everyone. 10K to 40K to upgrade is not feasible for a lot of small business owners. They need to develop software for the poor as well as the rich.
