## Questions & Answers

**Q: Dear all--is this stepper good for using when watching TV? Can you go slow with it for an hour or so or do you need to go with high intensity? Thanks**
A: XISER IS ALSO PERFECT FOR AEROBIC WORKOUTS, LIKE WHEN WATCHING TV, WITH XISER TURNED ON HIGH RESISTANCE AND GOING SLOW.

**Q: I'm getting the impression that this machine isn't made for long (45 minute +), steady state cardio, correct?**
A: It is if you purchase the Commercial version, which I did. The commercial version is worth the extra cost due to it's more robust piston design. Because of the upgraded pistons in the commercial design, you can perform either HIIT or slower-paced, anerobic training for longer periods of time. The original Xiser (non-commercial version) was ONLY designed for HIIT training. You can perform longer sessions on it, but the pistons will get quite warm because they were not designed for that use. It is a great product and if you perform HIIT training on it CORRECTLY, you cannot go for more than 45-60 seconds - just as in all-out sprinting. I am telling you, perform an 8-minute HIIT session on this with 8 sets of 30-40 seconds of HIIT, followed by 20-30 seconds of recovery ... and you will be sweating - and you will continue to feel the burning of your calories for 2-3 hours afterward. This is the true benefit of HIIT training. There is NO comparison to this product currently on the market. Hope this helps.

**Q: Can this be used slowly on the lowest setting to get roughly the equivalent amount of exercise to a middle-speed walk? (Note: no room in my house for a treadmill or another alternative to this.)**
A: yes. you an set any your difficulty... the more difficult the better the exercise, or 3x2 minit sprints and you are done - vs. 30 min walk

**Q: Does this hurt anyone’s knees?**
A: It didn’t hurt my knees! Can’t speak for anyone else’s knees!

    Design and Warranty EXCELLENCE

*by R***Z on Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2016*

I want to comment because I've enjoyed three plus years of HEAVY use with the Xiser AND want to offer my testimonial as to the EXCELLENT warranty and service that goes along with it. Like many other reviewers, I agree that the Xiser is WORTH its price and all rattletrap made-in-China contraptions should be ignored in favor of this product which actually delivers.First, a little background. I'm a 58 YO, male, 6'2" and 200 lbs. I began exercising circa 1983, aged 25 or so, when I realized that metabolism alone would no longer keep me lean. Somehow the fitness habit stuck AND decades now of several activities have followed without interruption, mostly group aerobic, step, & toning classes. As circumstances changed, I shifted into daily use of the company fitness center, which was OK but I increasingly felt uncomfortable with some of the other users I had to share facility (and locker room) space with. A health scare in March 2013 obliged me to retool my fitness routines, and one big leap of faith at that time was to purchase an Xiser for home use INSTEAD of trying to shudder through the unmonitored creepshow of the company facility. (I also became a big user of home workout DVD's, a few favorites have my reviews posted here on Amazon, which I encourage you to look at if interested.)I was (and remain) impressed by how durable, elegant in design and FUNCTIONAL the Xiser has proven to be. It is indeed a substantial and chunky (but compact) piece of gear, and unlike most made-in-China gizmos, it will not subtract ANY precious floor space from your living area. I highly recommend that you have some dedicated space for exercise, but if you can't swing it, the Xiser easily flattens for storage under a bed, sofa, closet. (You certainly cannot do that with a big-box store treadmill or stationary bike, for example.) Another huge advantage for me has been BECAUSE the Xiser is so compact, I can take it on vacation with me and continue my routines without interruption. I realize that may not be practical for everyone, but again, how many other items of fitness gear even offer that possibility?Again, I have been using the Xiser daily for three years now AND it has also been necessary for me to activate warranty assistance TWICE during that time (five year factory warranty). Now I hasten to add that I do NOT want to suggest that the Xiser is prone to breakdowns, and I sure can't say whether or not my difficulties have been claimed by other users. BUT I CERTAINLY want to make sure all prospective buyers appreciate the fact that the warranty is REAL and that Xiser DOES stand behind its product and will repair your unit (or, if truly defective, REPLACE it, I suspect) promptly and ungrudgingly. Let me add that I did have to pay freight and a minimal service fee for each repair--$30 each time--but measured against the cost of the Xiser and my odometer-melting use of it, it's still a bargain. I also feel that this level of service is very much the EXCEPTION in today's world of commerce, and DESERVES every word of praise I can lavish here. HOPEFULLY no buyer will NEED to pull the ripcord on warranty help, but I'm glad to be able to testify that such assistance is real, and you'll quickly get your unit repaired IF the need arises . (This assumes also that you're not abusing the equipment in some outrageous manner that will oblige Xiser to decline warranty coverage--I can't define where those lines get drawn, but like any other warranty, limitations do apply.)The Xiser has proven to be an indispensable and daily part of my workout routine, and I want to STRONGLY associate myself with the slogan used for its marketing: "The best exercise machine... Is the one you use". AMEN to that. Let's not even descend into the sinkhole of dashed ambitions tied to chintzy, wobbly, and inoperable WalMart "fitness" machines that shame you a month after you buy them because they hurt you or broke down within two weeks. HERE is a machine that will meet your aspirations halfway and deliver the workout and RESULTS you wanted from the beginning. I'm glad to join the other reviewers on Amazon in recommending the Xiser and to encourage readers to stretch to get a piece of equipment that is actually WORTH YOUR MONEY and equal to your fitness ambitions.Let me share a few motivational insights that I've internalized over my decades of fitness striving--1. Daily exercise should be like brushing your teeth. There is NEVER a question as to whether or not you exercise.2. Related concept: "If you're happy with the way you look, SURE, go ahead and take the day off." This always gets me back into the basement "aerobics lab" every time.3. You REALLY need dedicated space to work out, an area that is ready to go whenever you are. YES it is possible to adapt space "as needed" but I think you're setting yourself up for failure by not having your own home "workout lab".4. If your fitness aspirations are creating friction or passive-aggressive snark from others in your life, those relationships need to be seriously re-evaluated. See principle #1--would you pay any attention to anyone who felt threatened because you were brushing your teeth daily?5. While working out, consider what your FACE is doing. If you catch yourself grimacing, squinting, furrowing your brows--slacken your face muscles and put the effort where it belongs. You will be surprised at the difference this makes.6. Variation on #3: I did group classes for twenty years and I liked them, and recommend them if you find a venue you're comfortable with. HOWEVER having my own home fitness "cocoon" is likewise HIGHLY gratifying and productive. Available 24/7, with whatever audio/video backing I desire and full private "locker room"--impossible to top, and really the pinnacle for me personally.7. Be GRATEFUL that you're alive and able to act to improve your fitness and health, and to fully engage in and optimize this, the only life we'll ever enjoy.Hope this is helpful!

    Far more thana home stepper

*by M***B on Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2012*

I searched brick and mortar stores and also here on Amazon for steppers. In frustration after reading reviews I even wrote a blog: my first, stating that I owned a stepper that lasted 15 years before the tubes started to leak and bemoaned the fact that regardless of the brand, most of them seemed to break after very little use. Then I found this. It was originally a gift for a friend with a back problem who got his own in the meantime so I ended up with it. Probably would not have spent $400 but my husband said to get the commercial model, not the lower model as he knows our friend and I are both rough. Well, this thing is amazing. You may have to get used to balancing. I did, but I am always being told to improve my core balance and that I have "poor body mechanics". It is definitely working on that. You can change the resistance and speed. The other surprise was that there is a page with other exercises in it, where you can use it to work your shoulders, arms and stretch out your thoracic outlet and also one where you lay down and pedal it by having your knees bent. That one is really strengthing the outside muscles around my knees. If you do 2 minutes fast on this then do the other exercises you WILL be breathing hard and you can use it for velocity training. It is not for very elderly unless they are already in great shape. It is a real stepper. Takes up little space and is rock solid. This is a lifetime machine. I will die before it does. I originally cringed at the amount but I am very grateful now. I did not gain weight over Christmas and I am losing weight and toning up. Best of all I can grab five minutes whenever. Paying $400 once is a lot better than paying for the three steppers I have tried that died shortly after purchase. Easy to put together and small enough that it is marked airline compliant. I give it 6 stars.

Not just for "Short Bursts" - Can be used for a sustained effort if that is what you are looking for

*by J***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2012*

My husband bought this Xiser for me. I've got to say that this is a serious piece of exercise equipment and is perfect for my unique circumstances. I'm a 58 year old avid backpacker* and I need to maintain cardiovascular conditioning as well as quad strength between trips. Unfortunately, my knees won't let me run anymore so I need something low impact. I used to rely on a Precor elliptical at the gym with the cross ramp all the way up and the tension as high as I needed it to keep my heart rate above 140 ppm for an hour. The issue is that we are now retired and live/travel full time in a modest sized motorhome. I can't go to a gym anymore and we don't have the space or the ceiling height for an elliptical. So he bought me an Xiser. I tried the "Short Burst Exercise" but unfortunately the rapidity of the motion really made my knees hurt. However, I discovered that what I can do is use the "Hill Running technique" with the adjustment valve set for the highest resistance, the "slow setting". I don't understand why but it doesn't hurt my knees. It could be the increased effort engages my quads more and stabilizes my kneecaps. This is okay because I have to admit that I am still not convinced that short bursts on the Xiser would do what I need it to do; help keep my heart and legs in condition for carrying a backpack up hill for an extended period of time gaining significant elevation. So I use the "slow setting" and go against the directions by staying on it for an hour. I wear a heart rate monitor and can maintain an average heart rate well within my aerobic target zone. I listen to music with the appropriate tempo. I can also do "sprints" during my workout; I don't have to change the resistance, I just listen to music with a faster tempo.I'm not disputing the health benefits of "Short Burst Exercise"; I've read the info on the Xiser website. And I think it's great that doing short bursts of exercise works for so many individuals. It's too bad that my knees won't let me find out if it would work for me but maybe I'll be able to in the future after "Santa" brings me new ones. In the meantime I'm really happy to have found a durable, portable exercise device that I can use to get my "old fashioned" sustained aerobic workout and to maintain my quad strength without knee pain. It is well worth every penny.*Our "credentials" include extensive hiking and backpacking in US (including the 200 mile long John Muir Trail), Canada and New Zealand as well as iconic treks in Nepal, Peru and Tanzania (google "panafoot").Update: The Xiser is also helpful when recovering from hiking related injuries. I have used it to warm up my muscles before stretching. I have also used it to gradually return to hiking by slowly increasing the length of time I am on it.More recently I have been using it for "High Intensity Training" with the addition of an exercise band (I loop it under the front of the base with the adjustment valve set for the highest resistance,). I do 4 minutes at my usual pace (keeping my heart rate above 130) I then use the bands for 1 minute keeping my heart rate from 145 - 150. I repeat this for my entire 60 minute workout. So I continue to build endurance and build quad strength as well as receive the benefits of HIT.
