It "catches" the fish using magnets. It also says the number on the fish and other info, depending which animal you "catch." It does recognize what animal is caught on the line. Very cool toy. Good quality from the animals to the rod. The ocean mat you can place the animal on is cardboard, but that's not a big deal.
