I elected to paint it rather than let the bare metal finish go rusty. I used an acrylic automotive primer followed by Ford Mercury Grey (three coats) followed by a matt acrylic varnish to stop reflections and keep the silhouette appearance. This has worked very well. I also made a modification to the cup part by drilling a drain hole in there to stop water accumulating and glued a hard plastic cap on to the spigot that supports the rotating upper part in order to minimise wear and corrosion. The whole lot is supported in stone block so it can be moved to any location whilst remaining secure rather than simply poking it into soft ground. It certainly performs some interesting aerobatics when the wind gets going but the top has never come off. It would need lightning strike ( or an ME109) to do that. Review: So happy with my purchase - This is fantastic!!! I know it’s supposed to rust naturally and I have other garden ornaments that did. But I sprayed this in Satin Black and it looks just awesome!
