I would hook up my 3.5mm to the controller but when the music was low and someone talked or a loud noise (not the music) happened the controller mic still picked up the sound and the lights would change to it. The 3.5mm Y aux cable (included) goes directly in the controller then the 3.5mm extension aux cable (included) goes to either your music device, phone, mp3, and then you need another 3.5mm aux cable (not included) to the stereo to which the music will be playing out of the speakers. Testing if it works, turn the speakers low or off and still have the music play through the music device and the lights should still be dancing to the beat of the music. Also with this setup just turn the music off from your music device and make LOUD NOISES to see if the mic picks up the sound and lights dance or not, it should not. I know I'm 7 months late to this question but better late than never. **Q: Just received my controller and there are no instructions included on how to hook up the controller to play the LED’s off the beat of the music. help?** A: Fine a 12v source, mine was a small light I control by a switch. I had to use a High to low level line converter on a stereo so I can use this in a baot with the stereo, but the effect is awesome. Much better then It listening. There is no delay in the Effects with the audio beats. Also I added a headphone volume adjuster to be able to control sensitivity, There isn't one if your plugging the audio into this controller. The only adjustment is for the mic.
