## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this tool for 8 speed bikes.**
A: Yes. All modern bicycle chains have 1/2" spacing, or pitch, between pins. This tool will work on an 8-speed chain.

**Q: This gauge has two measurements, 0.5 and 0.75, I have a 7 speed mountain bike. Which measurement should use for when it is time to get a new chain?**
A: My understanding is that a 7-speed drivetrain can tolerate much more wear than newer 11- and 10-speed. My understanding is that 11-speed needs 0.5%, 10-speed is 0.75%. I would personally also use 0.75% for 9-speed, although I have gone farther to 1% without trouble in the past. But for a 7-speed chain you can certainly go to 1% wear before changing a chain. I'm sure there are chain wear tools out there that measure the larger 1% wear than this one. But if you use this one for a 7-speed chain, in my opinion you can consider the 0.75% level an early warning sign to replace the chain.

**Q: Where is this Park Tool made?**
A: The package says USA. Based on what I learned from my bike mechanic, this is not the best choice. He showed me something that cost around $20 and just drops in and seems a little better. A chain gauge by ProGold seems like the one he has.

**Q: Alright, I must of missed something! Just what in tarnation does the size of a man's... cassette have todo with the condition of his chain?**
A: The size of your cassette has nothing to do with the chain condition. Size doesn't matter, but using a 11X21 cassette would make you more manly! In this case the smaller the cassette the more manly ..... as opposed to the other thing .....

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simple but very effective.

Park Tool quality in a bare bones tool. Easy to use and simple to tell if your chain is ready to be replaced.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Magic at such a low cost!
*by on Reviewed in the United States October 3, 2019*

This is about the most specific tool you can buy. It does nothing but measure your Road bike chain fitness and let you know if it's time for a chain replacement. That's it. It can't do anything else. And lord knows I've tried. I've tried to make a jailhouse shiv out of it: failure; as dull as a butter knife. I've tried to use two as chopsticks at my local Vietnamese Pho restaurant: no dice. I've tried to re-market these as metal back scratchers: One person with a really itchy back bought one but ended up using it for it's intended purpose: to see if your bike chain is stretched beyond its useful life. And for that it's magic! What I really like about this tool is that it has a .5 inch measure (and also a .75 inch measure) that is a finer indicator for high end road bikes. I like to replace my chain when the .5 inch indicator slips too low into the chain links. It's a low tech tool that really is a bit of genius. Any serious or semi-serious Fred should own one.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ All you need

Works for all chain cassette quantities.Much longer in length than other such tools which increases its accuracy.Very easy to use.An essential tool for any cyclist's workbench. It will quickly pay for itself, a stretched chain will cost chainrings and cogs.
