If you let go of the rope under a load it will drop. It is very powerful, I think its a 7 to 1 ratio so 70 pounds is like lifting 10 pounds. You would need to tie the rope off in place to hold a suspend a load. **Q: What rope diameter can this accomodate?** A: Not sure what diameter the pully blocks can accomodate, but system came with 1/4 inch rope. No way I'd ever attempt to lift 4000 lbs with it. Works fine when lifting 258 lbs. **Q: Will this really lift/pull up to 2 tons using the supplied rope? It seems like the rope would snap first (with that much weight).** A: As packaged this is a 7 :1 ratio. As shipped one pulley.is not turning. If you pull the rope over that pulley and tie it off to the opposite Block, it will be an 8:1 ratio. With an 8:1 ratio, 4000 lb. would require you to pull 500 lb. to lift the load! That would be if their was almost no drag on any of the pulleys. Lifting 800 lbs would require a 100 lb pull. One review said lifting a 200 lb truck cap was difficult. If used as shipped, that required about 29 lb of pull. If changed to an 8:1 ratio he maximum weight this could lift is about 8 times your weight. Then how are you going to hold that load? This little pulley set will probably handle anything you can pull by hand. **Q: Does this pulley system come ready to use or is it in pieces that I have to put together? Thank you for your reply.** A: It was ready to use. You have to have something to hook it to, of course. I put a heavy screw eye into the rafter I am using it with, but otherwise it's ready to go. I did need to tie a knot in the very end of the pull rope, because when it's extended way out it tends to slip off the pulley, making it so you have to thread it back into place. I replaced it with a diamond braid rope.
