Studying at the local college, not far from her family’s home, she also worked and wrote articles for the college paper, which she loved. Another missing girl led Julia to do some research on missing girls and what she found horrified her. As she pitched her idea to her editor, she was stunned at the comments from a colleague – and also the results.Julia had a happy family life – she was the eldest of the siblings and in part felt responsible for her sisters’ wellbeing. But living at the college dormitory gave her a sense of independence – she and her roommate had been best friends for a long time. Was Julia about to put herself in danger with her relentless and paranoid pursuit into the unsolved cases?Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes is a short story by author Karin Slaughter and is the prequel to Pretty Girls – both of which were released in 2015. Not as tension filled as Slaughter’s usual work, nonetheless this novella was fast paced, gripping and a quick, easy read. I’ve already read Pretty Girls and it blew me away. The short story is an introduction to Slaughter’s upcoming novel, Pretty Girls. Julia Caroll is a college student and journalism major at the University of Georgia where her father is a professor. Julia is determined to write a story for the campus newspaper relating to the mysterious disappearance of a beautiful young fellow student, Beatrice Oliver. Very soon another “pretty girl” from the local homeless shelter disappears. Julia wants her article to project a strong warning to coeds of the potential for attacks and ways they can avoid the threat. In the process she forgets to heed her own advice as she walks home alone one night from a party.I was not enamored with the dialogue or the narration but after all, it is only an introduction to Slaughter’s new release. When I came across this digital short story, I thought it was time to sample her wares.Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes is a prequel to her novel Pretty Girls. A young woman goes missing in the college town of Athens, Georgia, and her description reminds Julia Carroll of herself: Nineteen, beautiful, blonde hair, blue eyes. Julia gradually becomes obsessed with the case and gets permission to write about it for her college paper.I really liked this short story. Instead of spelling out what readers are supposed to think and how they're supposed to feel, Slaughter merely leads us down the garden path, stopping to show us the flowers along the way. Our own imaginations supply the rest-- like the very real danger Julia is in. Julia, the typical teenager convinced of her own immortality....Will I be reading more works by Karin Slaughter?
