It came relatively sharp - not the sharpest, but sharp enough to slice through thin paper with a crisp edge and certainly mushrooms! The folding brush was the selling point for me, and keeps the bristles (which are a good balance of softness/stiffness) safe when not in use.This is a slip joint knife, which means that it doesn't technically lock into position, but the spring is strong enough that this knife feels very secure when open and stays firmly shut at the bottom of your bag or in your pocket (as it should!). The brush also "clicks" into place - it has a small metal bead hidden in the frame that catches on two depressions inside the frame, one when open and another when closed.Last but not least, this is the most attractive mushroom knife I've seen - sleeker lines than Opinel or Rough Rider, and the wood grain is exactly as pictured - radiates outward from the center. My only complaint is that there is no lanyard hole and it would be difficult to add one since both ends have metal caps AND moving parts that would interfere.
