4.5 stars: Great world-building for a first book

*by S***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 6, 2022*

I’ve read other Anna Zaires books, which I’ve loved, and this is different, but we still see some signature AZ steam and a J/P H. Too bad the h annoyed me many times😅 (the H deserves more than 5 stars lol).Mia’s (21) a college student, and considers herself an introvert and not very attractive. She has a roommate, who she’s very close to. She decided to attend college in New York because of the alien invasion that happened five years before. Her parents were afraid of them overtaking Florida, where she’s from, so she opted to go to a school that was further away. Nevertheless, the aliens ended up also living in New York. She’s never really interacted with them, until one day she meets one in the park, and the connection’s instant.Korum (2000) is tall, handsome, and very powerful. He sees Mia and is completely transfixed (low key- I looooved this! 🥰). Mia’s nervous and doesn’t know what to do- I mean, guuuurl, I. GET. IT! I’d be flabbergasted as well 😬 lol. He’s a tall, smexxxy man, a virile one 😈 and she’s a v…I’m lying. I’d know what I’d do 😅😉😈.But this is a book review, so let me get back to it 😂.He bulldozes himself in her life, and I was here for it. He starts to woo her and basically tells her that he’s claiming that v, so she needs to let it happen 💅. This guy has no shame- just the way I like ‘em 💁🏻‍♀️😈. So why was she hesitating so much? 😒.POSSIBLE SPOILERS:Suuuure, they’re bigger, stronger, almost immortal, and pretty much invincible. But girl. Get yours 👏🏻 😂😂😂. She gets approached by people that are part of “The Resistance,” a group of people who are against the alien invasion, and she’s between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, she doesn’t wanna just be a warm bed for Korum, and she’s seen the damage they can do to humans with their bare hands, but on the other hand, what the aliens have done for Earth’s amazing (cleaner, healthier, less waste, etc). I felt her turmoil, which is why I gave her some credit, but I also felt like slapping her for being so gullible sometimes. And Korum. Dear lord that alien 🔥. He’s ALL about Mia. He’s a LOT older (by like 1979 years lol) so he’s VERY experienced. I LOOOOVED how attentive he was to Mia. She’s a v, which means he has to… um… prepare her a lot (because y’all know he’s packing 💦). And oh boy, does he ever 😅🥵. I love me a man that always makes sure his woman’s ready 💅 and god, the stamina on this alien 🔥. He’s sooo intuned to Mia, I was melting behind my kindle 🔥😅. Even when he cares for her to help her heal… swooooooon. I love this man (move over Mia). And this man doesn’t take no for an answer (no noncon though- he’s just VERY persuasive 😉). He pays so much attention to Mia , even when she thinks he’s not, which is why their chemistry’s so explosive 🥵.It ends on a cliffhanger, but I would say it’s almost like a HFN. I’m curious to see what happens next, so maybe the book will go on sale lol.Overall, I enjoyed it. Mia annoyed me, but Korum saved the book for me 😉❤️.⚠️safety squad⚠️-no cheating/sharing/owd-omd: when the h goes clubbing with her roommate, she dances with om. The om kisses her (she didn’t want it) and the H nearly kills him. Swooooon 🥰-virgin h-mild praise kink-no dubcon/noncon (I was looking for it, trust me- the H is very persuasive though 💅)-no c@nd@ms: he’s an alien, so there’s that

There are Pros and Cons / Overview- It was a good read, easy flow.

*by Y***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 2, 2019*

Pros: Has an actual storyline, not just filler to explain romance or sexual encounters. Good use of "red herrings" to keep the story interesting and new. I only found one editorial mistake. The men's tones and the women's tones seem true to character, making the story more believable and easier to digest. The heat of the passion was on the higher side of the scale, not as blazing as I found Amelia Hutch's story Fighting Destiny, but a close competitor (maybe 4 stars where Amelia's story was 5 stars). The story, while not ending on a cliffhanger, does entice you to want to pick of the next book of the series and continue the story. This is what I would call perfect segue style. The reader feels accomplished enough at the end of this book that she is satisfied, not pissed off with unresolved issues, and she is happy to continue the story at her own pace....and pleasure. In all, despite my cons, I would highly recommend this book to someone looking for that DARK supernatural/extraterrestrial romance. If you don't understand what the DARK genre is (meaning not all fluff and often Alpha male figures) then please don't pick this book up, read it with your misguided psuedo-feminist ideals in place and then write a bad review. Everyone's fantasies are different that is what makes the world go round. If you don't find DARK romance genre appealing, stick to the LIGHT romance novels (says the Alpha Female who is writing this review).Cons: Granted, I have not read the rest of the series and this point that I am about to make may be answered or utilized in later scenes, but I found the fact that a 3rd year Psychology student would not recognize or slightly question the possibility of Stockholm syndrome. Unless there is a major plot twist that involves her field of study later on in the series, I find the choice of making the heroine a Psych major questionable or at least not very clearing thought out. Secondly, these two are like rabbits, there's a lot of sexual encounters in the book. While good sexual scenes are great, I would have like to see more of their relationship or personal reactions to events outside of the bedroom to flush the characters our more. Thirdly, while I am all open to new views to keep storylines fresh, to explore new ideas, and to look at things from new angles, this author's heavy-handed Leftist leanings got a little in the way of the story. From veganism to religion, it's all fair game. The story devolves several times into soap-box rants against planetary abuse when less dictated and belittling of human existence would have serve the same purpose. However, this would have even been something one would quickly jump over when reading, but the author continues on a progressive tone of belittling various religions for the sake of the story as well. Even this would have been tolerable if done once in order to add a piece to the story, but again it happened several times. Sadly, this work of fiction suffered a little from personal angers, I believe. As stated, it was a good, easy read. Very enjoyable despite the overtures of more progressive ideals. I will more than likely continue the series at leisure when I feel like being talked down to for my choice of the occasional chicken tender or steak. I found the story interesting enough to continue and not let my personal feelings exclude the possibility of better storylines along the way. Happy reading follow readers!

    Stockholm syndrome much?

Like 50 Shades, this is another book about an "innocent virgin" being pushed around by an abusive creep, and the author seems to assume the reader is likewise too immature and stupid to know the difference between passion and control. It's positively cringe-worthy in places, and the characterisations are all very weak. The book also suffers from that typically American insularity:"He spoke in perfect American English, without even a hint of an accent." Like the auto-generated voice used by Stephen Hawkins' machines, then? All people have accents, and Americans speak in one of a whole bunch of American accents. You simply can't talk without an accent.Plus there are long passages where you can plainly see the author frantically waving her hands - there's a long expositional stretch early on about the changes to the human diet imposed by the vampiric aliens, about how they realised meat-eating and dairy were destroying the planet and the American's health.... so the authors' a vegan then? I personally don't give a toss what the author chooses to eat, but I would like my fiction without a lot of crammed in lectures, thank you very much! All in all, this really isn't very good.
