First one was much cheaper off brand and it was horrible. I should not have tried to save money. First one covered my presto pressure lid with rust after just 1 canning! It wasn't well made stainless steel probably. So I bought this one and it worked great! My presto pressure cooker came with pressure gauge. First one broke after 2 canning times. Then a few months later the second one got stuck on 5. I didn't want to spend $20-30 every few months on pressure gauge. So I bought this weighted pressure regulator and I am never going back to gauges. Less babysitting needed and the weighted presto regulator doesn't just inform me of the pressure I need during canning, it actually regulates the pressure. I love it!!! Review: Exactly what I needed! - I honestly don't understand why Presto doesn't package this as standard with their pressure cookers and pressure canners instead of the fixed 15 pound weight. This weight lets me choose between 5 lb, 10 lb, and 15 lb. It is perfect for me. When I can tomatoes at 11 pounds, I use the 10 pound weight and it works perfectly. The pressure rises to 11 pounds and starts releasing. This way I don't have to be quite as diligent with my flame since it will exhaust the excess without generating excess pounds. BTW, I process/can tomatoes with a pressure canner instead of water bath because it's faster (uses less natural gas) and the pressure canner fits on the stove better than the big water bath pot, especially when I'm using the other burners. If you have a Presto pressure cooker or pressure canner, you really need this. It's a shame they don't include it instead of the fixed weight that comes with their equipment. Also, I should note that my Presto pressure canner has a port for the weight as well as the dial gauge. I recommend the canner with a gauge. That way, you can use the weight to regulate while also viewing the pressure so you know exactly what is going on. You are also able to tell that your gauge is calibrated or not based on how it reads with respect to the size weight you are using. If you are buying a pressure canner, make sure you get the model with the gauge. It's only a few dollars more. Be careful, the model at WalMart may not have the gauge. CORRECTION on the response by Presto here: According to Presto records 0178107 also requires pressure regulator 50332 (this model). The response here listed pressure regulator 09978 as being the correct one for 0178107, but that is just the number for the default 15lb pressure regulator which comes with all of the 23 qt models. The model 50332 will also work for the 23 qt induction plate added model(so the canner works on induction cooktops) 01784. **Q: Will this regulator fit and work on model 1755 sold by amazon?** A: Yes, that regulator will work on the 1755. It will work on any Presto model which has part # 09978 as the pressure regulator. **Q: I'm new to canning. I live at 5,000 feet. Will I need this for a new Presto 23 qt.?** A: No, at 5,000ft you will be canning at 13 psi on a dial gauge. IF (and that can be a big if) you have a convenient place to get the gauge tested each year (check with your county extension office) then you are better off doing that and using the gauge so that you don't (slightly) overprocess the food by canning at 15 psi (using all 3 pieces) with this weight set. The original one is severely corroded in the pocket and all around the outside surface. That one isn’t adjustable though I don’t see myself ever using that feature.
