You do have to charge it by itself, not with the phone in the cradle. However, it does charge fast. It's not to bulky for a battery case. My phone is gold so I notice the difference. The other thing that is a HUGE problem for me is the fact that in order to plug my headphones into the phone I have to take the case off.
