His bulky, fuzzy robe made him look like he was in a sauna. He even said he wished he had one of those kimonos he was given to wear at a resort where we stayed in Japan where everyone wore a yukata (an under-kimono) everywhere -- out to dinner in the resort, to the baths, to play pachinko, to go site seeing, everywhere! It is comfortable and lightweight and it's up to you what (if anything) you wear underneath. I bought it for his birthday. Get a real obi if you want a more formal look.
