## Overview

The MXR Timmy Overdrive is a professional-grade guitar effects pedal designed by veteran builder Paul Cochrane, offering three clipping modes and cut-only bass and treble controls to preserve your guitar’s natural tone. Housed in a compact MXR mini chassis, it delivers dynamic, responsive overdrive with high-fidelity signal clarity, making it a must-have for discerning players seeking versatile, space-saving pedalboard solutions.

## Description

The MXR Timmy Overdrive provides a huge, responsive range of gritty and textured tones that enhance the sound of your rig while preserving its fundamental character—and in an MXR mini housing, this pedal will free up some serious pedalboard space. It’s based on a design created by veteran pedal builder Paul Cochrane that’s widely celebrated among high level pros, from first-call Nashville session player Kenny Greenberg to first call L.A. player Lyle Workman to rockstar Brad Whitford. When Paul decided to bring his pedal to a wider audience, he chose to work with the MXR design team. “It’s an honor to work with MXR,” Paul says. “My first ever pedal was a Phase 90.” Thanks to Paul’s inventive implementation of clipping options and tone controls, this pedal is a working guitar player’s dream come true. The Clip switch provides three different clipping styles that cover a multitude of playing situations, whether you need an always-on sound that’s big and bold with a ton of headroom to slam the front end of your amp, a more compressed and saturated sound for fat, gnarly chords, or anything in between. The Bass and Treble controls offer further refinement of your sonic profile. Firstly, they’re cut-only, keeping the character of your signal intact and making it super easy to dial in a clean boost. Secondly, Paul wired the the Bass control to affect your pre-OD signal so that you can your maintain low end at lower Gain settings and the Treble control to affect your post-OD signal so that you can adjust the top end to keep dirty settings smooth and musical. Finally, the MXR design team worked closely with Paul to select an op-amp that perfectly complements his expertly crafted design. They landed on the LF353, a trusty component well-respected by Dunlop engineers for providing high output, high gain, and hi-fi signal delivery. The resulting MXR Timmy Overdrive is a professional-grade must-have for players who want sweet, harmonic breakup that responds to playing dynamics and maintains the personality of your rig at a fraction of the size of a standard pedal.

Review: This is the dirt pedal you are looking for! - From the first note, I could tell this was a great low-gain, dirt/grit pedal. Perfect for blues, and a light smattering of dirt on your notes, or stacking with other drives for that extra saturation. The tone controls are responsive, functional, and the pedal imparts very little overall coloring, while adding that nice touch of dirt. The three postion switch is not as noticeable at modest gain settings, but if you use the pedal for more of an overdrive, or light distortion, the left and right positions of the switch become more apparent. The right position is more compressed, with dynamics evened out, while the left position is more spitty, and adds a little more hair to the sound. I prefer the center position, which is more natural, with an open, dynamic feel. Gained up, the pedal has a nice warm overdrive sound, that on it's own will get you into rock territory. It does get a little mushy with the gain up higher, which winding back the bass control helps to tighten up, but this pedal is most at home with gain settings between 11-2-oclock in my opinion. If you are looking for a pedal that punches above its weight, sounds great, and is well made, the MXR Timmy is the pedal you are looking for. I am getting a second one to put on my B-Board, it is that good. I was hesitant at first to get one, having a Caline Pure-Sky already, which is also an amazing pedal, I wasn't sure the MXR Timmy would be a notch up. Curiosity got me though, and I am glad I made the jump. The Timmy is an amazing pedal, so if you were on the fence about getting one, just do it.
Review: Timmy in the mini pedal format. Great basic distortion tone - What can I say... its the Timmy in a mini pedal size. Great sounding basic distortion tone. Pricey, but worth the money.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is it really this big? item dimensions lxwxh	551.18 x 452.76 x 255.9 inches**
A: No, it's a mini pedal footprint. About half the size of a standard pedal.

**Q: Does it works with 9 or 18 volts?**
A: Just got off the phone with Paul C - he doesn't know if the MXR Timmy can safely run at 18v (it seems that MXR changed his original design a bit) - so until further notice, I'd play it safe and just run it at 9v

**Q: Packaging list doesn’t say anything about power cord. Is there one included?**
A: No.

**Q: Is this pedsl good for glass tones?**
A: It is very transparent and doesn't noticeably color your guitar's tone. Hope that helps

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Timmy in the mini pedal format. Great basic distortion tone
*by G***K on July 7, 2025*

What can I say... its the Timmy in a mini pedal size. Great sounding basic distortion tone. Pricey, but worth the money.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best transparent drive pedal under $200
*by H***N on June 7, 2023*

Bought this to replace a JHS Morning Glory. Does the same but better and is way more versatile. The gain can be a little granular past noon and into light fuzz territory when cranked, which might not suit everyone, but it the toggle switch provides the ability to add a little smoothing and compression. Love this drive stacked with a klon or clone. Perfect "always on" pedal to fatten up your amp tone. The bass and treble cut eq is powerful and has replaced the need for a post drive eq pedal in my rig.
