Probably 1 1/4". **Q: Would it hurt anything to leave the blue protective plastic over the stainless steel for an outdoor installation?** A: I suppose you can, but not sure why you would leave on blue plastic. Mine is in garage, gets driven over, salt in winter and no rust or problem.
