I do know that they are very solid gouges etc, 59 - 61 in that hardness scale and keep a sharp edge very well. The shafts are thick enough and long enough to allow you to change the base angle if your cutting edge. Anywhere from the suggested 22 Guage that is the basic edge provided, down to less or up to higher as whatever type of wood you are working on, hard or soft requires steeper or less steep bevel. These tools provide ample real-estate to accomplish whatever type of bevel you wish. The handles are solidly attached and I have never had a reason to complain about them wiggling around. So, even if they did come from China, it truly makes zero difference to me. I worry more about functioning than who made it or where the factory is located. Nostalgia may make a difference to someone, but absolutely not to me. To spend 4 or 5 times the dollar amount to claim French, Swiss or German heritage on a single piece if steel with a wooden handle is ludicrous in my book. I bought what I could afford as starting gouges and with these 3 sets, totalling 23 gouges etc, I was and am very pleased. Granted, Schaaf has not grown into a company large enough to create every version of tools made by Swiss, Ashley Isles, Henry Taylor etc, but to be honest if I need a single special gouges will just save up enough cash to go purchase it. With the Swiss made, Ashley isles or Henry Taylor items, it just takes four times longer fir me to save up enough to go get that one specialty gouge and I will get there eventually. Starting out with these 23 tools is a great choice for a beginner upnto a real honest professional master, so why waste cash if you don't need to? Is that going to make your carving more valuable? I think not, the end purchaser doesn't care how you make the art, they just.purchase what they like anyway, and if I can use that extra money to purchase Carville wooden blocks, so much the better! **Q: where are they made?** A: I'm not sure, but they are excellent tools, well made and if you get them with professionally sharpened option they are ready to go right out of the box. **Q: Where is this made? There were still striations on the bevelsconsistent with the finest stone used at the factory was around 350 to 400 grit. A minute or two on a 1000 grit diamond stone followed by another couple of minutes on a very fine ceramic stone, and finishing up by stropping on cardboard loaded up with white rouge brought each of them to a mirror finish. Given that the steel is pretty hard, this wasn't much work at all. These tools hold their edges pretty well, requiring only quick stropping every 5-10 minutes. These tools are what I'd consider a medium size. They're not so big that they can't be used with a single hand, but not so small that it's awkward to use two. Given that these are intended for final cleanup and details, these are a good compromise.
